    I am editing a Word doc where the authors number their tables 1a, 1b, 1c, 2a, 2b, etc.

    I have consulted the instructions here
    http://inyourwordsediting.com/wordtoc/word2007listoftables.shtml
    but cannot figure out how to have Word create a list of tables that reflects the numbering schema the author’s used. I cannot change the numbering because this is a widely used medical assessment document.

    I appled Caption style to the table captions (they were just normal text previously) but when I click Insert Table of Figures in the References>Captions field, “No table of figure entries found” ditto for when I select Figure in the captions label.

    So I’m at a loss as far as creating a list of tables that reflects the numbering scheme.

    The other option would be to assign a TOC value to the captions so that the TOC displays them. I assigned TOC3 style to the caption and then updated the entire TOC, but they didn’t appear.

    Can anyone help me out in either of these options?

    Thanks.

      Captions on tables typically use the {Seq Table} field rather than {Seq Figure} which is why your table of figures doesn’t find entries.

      Your TOC can be built two ways – either using the presence of the table caption fields or using the style assigned to those paragraphs.

      1. {TOC c “Table” h z}

      2. {TOC t “Caption,3” h z}

      You can create a TOC by creating the field brackets by typing Ctrl-F9 and typing either of the above in between the brackets. Then press F9 to build the TOC.

        Create a new style, called, say CaptionTable, that is based on your caption style (so it will look the same if that’s what you want). Apply your new caption style to all table captions. I have manually numbered captions in this situation, and if your tables are already numbered, that may be the simpler solution. To insert table TOC, on the references tab click Insert Table of Figures. In the TOF dialog, click Options. Choose your style from the list under Build table of figures from. Word will automatically select the check box for Style.

        I don’t know much about medical conventions, but in science journal (physics, math, engineering research) conventions, all parts (a, b, etc.) of a table or figure appear under one caption, consisting of an an overall description of what is shown followed by descriptions of the parts. The parts only have their labels ((a), etc.) affixed. For example,
        Table 2.—Metrics and measures. (a) Length. (b) Mass weight. (c) Volume.

        If you can do something like that, you can use the caption numbering feature after all.
