I had been using my old HP PSC 950xi printer with no problems for a number of years with a Windows 7 laptop that recently died on me.  I have another Windows 7 laptop that I’m trying to use it with but it just won’t install properly.  The only driver I have available is for Windows XP and try as I might I simply cannot find a driver anywhere on the web.  I’ve even tried under my account with HP and they won’t even recognize the serial # for the printer nor will they provide anything for my particular model printer.  Apparently it’s too old for them to even support.  Does anybody know of any way to get this old printer to work with Windows 7?  I’ve even tried installing a generic text-only printer driver and that didn’t work either.

Not sure what you want me to do.  I’ve checked the link you provided but I’ve been there, done that.  The bottom line is I can’t find the driver I need.  I’ve watched the pertinent video as well and it tells me to download the driver but that’s impossible.   HP simply does not provide the driver.

When you choose Windows 7 as the OS on the webpage, the driver not being listed under “All drivers” indicates that the driver is built into Windows 7.

This is actually a very relevant thread for me.

On our Win 7 Pro 64-bit PCs in my wife’s mini-office, and then later at home on my Win 10 Pro 64-bit PC, I want to be able to point each PC to the drivers for our old HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 (A909g) even though the 8500 printer died and we are using newer printers.

Why? Because the drivers and firmware for the 8500 are MUCH BETTER than the drivers and firmware that come with the slightly later 8600 or our very recent 9010.  The 8500 software has “Print preview”, which HP deliberately removed from later software to force us to waste ink.  The 8500 software also has much better preference preset features.

HOWEVER, the ideal would be to install the 8500 software in such a way that the PC’s “Add Devices and Printers” control panel page finds the 8500 software in its own dropdown list of possible printers.  I know that that will be the best way to “install” this software to use it on the later model printers.

How do I “install” the 8500 software so that it appears as an option in the dropdown list of possible printers in the PC’s “Add Devices and Printers” control panel page ?

      Thanks.
