Need desktop Flash reader

I need a DESKTOP Flash reader where I can play Flash files saved to my PC.

I have tried Swiff Player (http://www.globfx.com/products/swfplayer/) but it does not work. When I try to run SWFPlayer.EXE I get this error message:

I can play flash in either FF or IE w/o problems.

I originally sent an email inquiry to support@globfx.com and when I didn’t get a response, I reset the same email to all the addresses I could find for them which include bug@globfx.com, feedback@globfx.com and sales@globfx.com

I STILL have not received a reply! Jeez.

I verified that I have the Adobe Flash Player installed at:
http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

Which returned:
You have version 10,0,45,2 installed

I then tried Flash Movie Player (FMP) (http://www.eolsoft.com/freeware/flash_movie_player/)

Attempting to run this, I get this error message:
Flash Movie Player requires Macromedia Flash Player plugin, which is not found at this system. Go to the Macromedia site to download and install plugin?

I’ve also sent emails to Eolsoft via their web contact form and again, have not received a reply. They have hidden domain registration through GoDaddy, so there is no way to contact them directly (WHY any clean commercial company would hide their domain contact information is beyond my understanding!).

I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling both application but this has not helped or changed anything at all.

Anyone have any ideas? Is anyone running these programs that could test with a desktop SWF file?

So why not just right click on the .swf file and ‘Open With’ FF or IE?

I didn’t think of that

But I do notice that my right click options only show IE, not FF. Wonder why…

A: If you fully confident you can view flash in the browser, but Flash Movie Player doesn’t want to start, it seems you are not using Internet Explorer as a default internet browser :). Some browsers (Opera, for example) install Flash plugin only for itself, not for the whole system. Try to navigate to the Macromedia’s flash installation verification page using Internet Explorer, and you’ll know the real information about Flash Plugin in your system.

So check flash page with I.E. and NOT Firefox (as they use different plug-ins).

That is weird. I did test at Adobe but only for FF. But I could see in Add/Remove list that I had both the FF plug-in and the IE Active-X control installed. I downloaded both of these from FileHippo (which is how I always install the Flash updates).

However, when I went to the Adobe test page from inside IE, it made me reinstall the Active-X control.

NOW, Swiff Player works. I guess it is hard coded to depend on IE, which is poor design.

But at least I learned that I shouldn’t buy anything from Eolsoft if I hoped to get email support from them…

Rather than depending on IE, it probably depends on the ActiveX control, which Adobe doesn’t install unless you visit the site with IE or ask for it from the other versions list. The maker of Swiff should better explain their error message.

Irfanview plays flv independent of browsers. It’s my default player for flv and mov.
