I need info on backup programs. I have always used Win built in backup.  Mine is broken right now and people are trying to help me get it going. (https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/i-cant-backup-windows-10-with-built-in-system/)

Meanwhile I tried MiniTool ShadowMaker but that only saw my C drive (SSD) with the operating system.  All my stuff is on a second HDD drive D that came with computer.  I brought over My Documents, My Pictures and My Music from Win7 and put it on D drive just kept putting new stuff there too.

Win built in back up got it all, C and D and an image, but MiniTool only backed up files and folders on C and that is not where my stuff is.  It did not offer D as a choice.  I need a back up program that can work with both C and D drives the way Win backup did.

Any suggestions appreciated.  Must be simple to use.  Thank you.

There are some good ones out there. My favorite is Easus. The free version should work fine, and I find it easy to use.

Years ago I had a program called Memeo. You would tell it which folders you wanted to back up on your computer. It did an initial backup of those folders, then it would automatically back up whatever changed in any of those folders. Also, you would tell it how many copies you wanted to retain – that is, the last three changes, the last five changes, etc.

This sort of backup is not the same as a whole-drive backup done from time to time; with that type of backup, you can go back months and recover something from the backup you did months ago. Rather, this kind of backup is a backup of what is currently on your drive, and it allows you to recover something that you accidentally deleted or changed.

Once I set Memeo up, as long as my backup drive had space available, I never had to touch it after that. It worked completely automatically, without my having to do a thing. And if I ever had to recover a file, I could find it in the archive and copy it to whatever folder I wanted to.

I haven’t used Memeo in years, so I don’t know how it is these days. But it is still out there — https://www.memeo.com/backup-products/.

Since most of us never do a backup of any sort, Memeo would be an excellent choice for backup software, because it is set-and-forget.

My go-to choice is Macrium Reflect 8. It works well for me.

Not sure but Macrium may need same shadow space on Win10 that is my current problem.  As I searched for solution seems like I came across Macrium backup running into no space also.  I will look again.

Are you sure it can only see C?
What type of backup did you select?

      cheers, Paul

p.s. there are several other backup apps in the thread where you got MiniTool from.

When I selected files and folders as type, it only offered C drive.  I don’t know if creating image picked up D drive.

On my system I can see all drives, including the external, as sources. What do you get?

I will show some screen shots.  When it asks type of file it only offers C drive.  When I just choose the disc it says pick a file.  Finally I got it to back up D to E (easystore) but I have no idea what I got.  I cannot see the files.  List in file explorer gives one size but right click properties gives another.

I don’t like this tool.  I can’t see what I got.  I could see what I got with Win built in back up.  I can’t open anything that was moved to E easeystore backup.

Nothing is moved. You have a backup in the form of a single file (mpi).
Select Restore in ShadowMaker and you will be able to select the mpi file and examine the contents.

Do you have any suggestions for usable backups i.e. being able to open up the other storage location and use the files without conversion of file formats?

      • #2440158

What are you asking? Conversion of file formats?

A backup program takes a copy of your data and places it in a single file that you can place on an external disk and restore anywhere you want.

        cheers, Paul

Macrium Reflect (free version) can create image files which are mountable and can be browsed and copied from as if they were a drive.  I believe most backup software would do this but I do not know.

newest versions of Easeus Todo Backup free edition (v13.5, 2022 & higher) no longer have the Disk Clone / System Clone option available, which I use to do complete backups to spare HDDs & SSDs. only Home/Pro editions of recent Easeus Todo Backup versions have Disk Clone & System Clone options available which these higher editions are paid (non-free) editions

I think that’s why I keep older versions of certain backup software like Easeus Todo backup free (I have v12.8 & v13.0 of those) and Macrium Reflect Free 7.3 – no need for me to download newer versions unless they provide support for newer Windows versions like for Win11
