    Hello:

I hope that someone will be able to help me. I need to renew my firewall, the subscription had expired since august 1, 2005.

I went a head and filled out the online renewal, only to find out that I would have to shell $35.00 a year. I find that to be nothing more than robbery.

I am better off just purchasing an upgrade from a retail shop?

    Thanks dillon

If you can find a newer version (upgrade) at a better price than the subscription renewal (and in most cases you can), that would be my choice. You might want to read this thread if you decide to go the upgrade route.

I suppose you can regard it as a cost-benefit analysis. Is the trauma, hassle and effort of cleaning up one virus infection per year worth $35 of your time? Then consider that if it’s on broadband the time before a non-firewalled PC becomes infected with viruses is supposedly less than a few hours!

Obviously if you can find an upgrade cheaper, that is all well and good, but upgrades can bring their own problems with them. That’s why I simply forked out the money for another year’s AV updates and stuck with Norton Internet Security 2004… (Not sure what I do next March, though, when the next payment event is due. Perhaps go for ZoneAlarm Security Suite?).

        Hello Rebel:

I have read your response, and I reviewed the thread that you had suggested to me. I am not prepared to sit down, and speak with the NAV customer services.

I use winfax pro; it was a headache just trying to delete all the files, I even went in the jungle (registry) to delete a particular file. NO thanks!

John Gray: I was about to run out and purchase an OEM version, but said no, I even called the customer service to update the subscription, and the individual expressed to me that 2006 was out, again, NO thanks!

There has to be a better way; MS firewall is still in the beta stage; I just don’t have any confidence in the MS firewall software. John Gray, I felt guilty after reading your response, you need to be in politics.

This morning the news stated that Bill Gates fortune was at in the billions, I wonder why!

When I was using NAV I found that it was cheaper to buy it at a retail store. Here is the greater Seattle area we have several major outlets including Fry’s. We could it for almost free after the rebates.

I have stop using NAV and am using F-Prot as my AV and ZoneAlarm as my firewall. They seem to do the job quite well and a lot cheaper.

        Hello Dave A:

Please tell more, I have heard about issues with Zone Alarm, and where can I find the other product F-prot?

        Thanks

Most of what you have heard about ZA was with version 5, check out the different threads here in the lounge.

Are you using a suite that contains both Norton Antivirus and Norton Personal Firewall? If so, I would encourage you to update your AV sooner rather than later, whether with Symantec or another company. Trend Micro was offering a $25 “competitive upgrade” rebate on PC-cillin Internet Security; I’m not sure whether that still is available!

Although Symantec’s purchase of Sygate Personal Firewall may bode ill for its future, the free version still is available for download here for the time being. It’s a good product that can tide you over while you consider your other options.

            UPDATE:

I finally bit the bullet and update my NFirewall, however, the customer service rep, said she was going to bill me an extra $13.00 dollars for a processing fee. No, your not I replied, I only want to pay for the upgrade. I will be writing a letter to symantec, and informing them that this extra fee is not right.

Processing Fee? Phaaaa. So it really costs them $13.00 to sell you something? Not likely.

You should be able to find someone who will sell you that product without trying to soak you.
