yes, far east knows what REAL storms are, i hope the southland coast people get back (if they can.) i have been around the wild west mountain fires since june 5 (Catalina mountain n. tucson and the 4 fires burning in Colorado for weeks now) (cough, cough) but i never wanna get in the middle of another hurricane. we had to leave the rigs on the gulf when it was showtime and head north quickly (or else)…

AskWoody PlusAugust 26, 2020 at 6:18 pm #2291899Unfortunately many won’t heed the warnings. Probably more so now due to the covid pandemic. This storm is a beast and that area is flat so they’re talking storm surge of 20′ up to 40 miles inland. Prayers up for everyone in its path and to the 1st responders and SAR teams that will have their work cut out for them.

MemberAugust 26, 2020 at 6:47 pm #2291903Attached, the latest predicted path of the storm, from entering the Gulf of Mexico, crossing the lower USA and finally leaving the Eastern Seaboard, returning to the Atlantic Ocean some three days later. So, at least as predicted, it will move quite fast, not sitting for days and days on the same place, raining torrentially all the time and causing devastating floods in land, as it has occurred in a few occasions in recent years. I live inside the current uncertainty cone of probable passage, and this has been so for several days now, but in the worst case of a direct hit, it’s likely to get here as a mere tropical depression, with winds no much above 40 mph: enough to cause some blackouts and damage, but not very widespread or, in the case of the electricity supply, long-lasting.
As it lands, its winds are likely to remain at tropical storm level and higher up to some 200 miles away from the eye of the storm, so widespread wind damage will be added to the devastation of the huge storm surge.
Here are recently posted details on the various threats the storm presents:
So, if you are in the portion of the likely path where it is expected to be blowing at hurricane strength and you can manage to do so, then get out. Putting evacuees in shelters also poses additional concerns, because of the novel coronavirus pandemic, so be careful.
