I have just purchased and returned a Sysnology DS218 NAS device as the fan was considerably loud even when running in quiet mode.

I am looking to replace my elderly ReadyNAS Duo v2.

Could anybody recommend a NAS device without a noisy fan, with a media server, and SMB 2.0 or above?

    Many thanks,

    Mark.

Dong Ngo seems like a trustworthy source for NAS reviews

I have owned 3 Synology NAS boxes and never had fan noise issue. So, a bit surprised and curious as the experience of others.

I purchased a Synology DS220+ a year ago and I never hear the fan.

It sits under my desk behind my 2 Dell desktops and next to my router and Spectrum modem.

I can hear the fan in my DS120 when everything else is turned off and I listen carefully.

Have you tried setting the fan speed to quiet. Control Panel > Hardware & Power

      cheers, Paul

      Hi Paul,

Tried it in quiet mode, still far too noisy, so I sent it back.

RD – Could you record the fan noise on your 220 for me please.

Do anybody know if the DS720 fan is quiet?

I am looking to try another Synology NAS but am still concerned about the fan noise.

Could anybody recommend a NAS that has a quietish fan as the unit would be left on 24 hours.

I have a DS218 box with a pair of Western Digital WD60EFRX 6TB drives and I can’t hear it. Maybe you unfortunately drew the occasional loud one?

Mine is an exchange because my first DS218 had a problem with the fan; it wasn’t loud, but it wasn’t cooling the drives either. I actually would have replaced the fan myself but it can’t be removed by the user. Too bad a cheap fan is permanently installed like that because a removable one could solve a headache later on.

Could you video it booting up and in full use so I can see how noisy yours is please. Many thanks.

Just an FYI. There are two tricks to cut down on the need for NAS cooling. If you have mechanical hard drives, configure them to sleep after a period of inactivity. If you have a Synology NAS (others too?) you can configure the box to turn itself off at night and then back on in the morning. Synology even allows different schedules for different days of the week.

Need it on 24 hours as it records my cctv footage.

    • #2426753

If it’s used for CCTV the noise may be the disks, not the fan.

      cheers, Paul

Unfortunately not, as the fan noise started as soon as I started to setup the NAS.

Do you know of any NAS’s out there that are quiet as I desperately need to purchase a new one.

        • #2426810

As has been said by several people, very little noise from our Synology units.
Do you have a cupboard you can put it in?

          cheers, Paul

I am looking at trying a ds720+ does anybody else have one of these and are they reasonably quiet?

    • #2426970

Also can you map the network shares using net use in Windows or do you need to use their software?

      • #2427055

You can always map drives using “net use”, but the share needs to be created on the NAS first.
This is the same with any NAS.

I now have a Terramaster F2-422 and all is fine good setup and quiet fan.

One problem I am trying to back up the system to an external USB drive using their USB copy app but it starts then the drives stop and the USB drive lights out.

      Any ideas anyone?
