I have named 2 cells in a notebook. These cells do move thru insertions and deletions. The cells themselves (not the name) are linked to another notebook. However, I cannot seem to use the NAMES in the linking formula. All I want to do is grab the value from the named cell. I don’t do another thing with it.

I’ve tried editing the link , deleting the cell address and putting in the name but that doesn’t work.

Obviously I’m missing something but I don’t know what.

    Thanks for any help!!!

      Hi Peggy

The example below shows how I have two workbooks, one called booki1 and the other Book2. I have open them up within the same excel shell and the used Insert|Name

and linked it from Book2 to Booki1 the reference is =[booki1.xls]Sheet1!$E$1 I named it myLinkCell and it does calculate, is this what you are looking for?

I did figure out what the problem seems to be: I wanted the named cell to be relative rather than absolute since I insert and delete rows above it. I had had some trouble with the named cell not “moving” properly but it seems to be now with the absolute references in place. And of course that makes the links referring to the named cell work. Now I know: NO RELATIVE REFERENCES!

Thanks Jerry! I wouldn’t have figured it out without your example hitting me over the head stupidme
