I’m pretty sure that this is a Win 7 problem, if it isn’t I apologise.

I have just taken deilvery of a new HP Mini 210-1000sa netbook with Win 7 (starter) installed my desktop still runs XP.

The home network is a wired ethernet one.

When accessing the desktop from the netbook all is fine and works well.

However when trying to access the netbook from the destop I get a request for a user name/password before access is allowed.

I have no passwords set on the netbook.

I rang HP and after the usual delay of 25 minutes, I get through to a technician who proceeds to ask all the questions and then informs me that this is beyond the remit of after sales tech support and puts the phone down on me.

Now I could rant and rave against HP but, for the moment, all I want is some help getting over this problem.

As far as User Names are concerened I have tried all possible combinations of computer name/user name to no avail.

Am I right in thinking that Win 7 deals with networks in the same way as XP apart from what appears to be some small worfinf differences.

IIRC, you actually need to set a username/password to be able to log into Windows 7 remotely. It is some new security condition part of Win7.

Hi David and welcome

I suspect you are running the “homegroup” model for networking. The password it is looking for is the one given when the network was setup. its not a netbook password but the homegroup password.

Homegroup requires a password, the alternative “workgroup” model does not. If this is a mixed environment (win 7 and other OS) you should be running workgroup anyway. Workgroup allows a no password connection and uses IPv4 which is more reliable than homegroups IPv6.

The change is easy. simply create a new network using the workgroup model. when it is working you can kill IPv6 and homegroup

DaveA wrote in another message that Vista and Win 7 need passwords on their accounts in order for file sharing to work.

You write that passwords are not necessary.

I’m having a vaguely similar problem with my new Win 7 box: it can read and write shared drives on all of my other computers (both XP & Win 98se) but none of those machines can access any folders or files on the Win 7 box.

All machines use the same Workgroup name and the same account name (Admin) exists on all machines.

Suggestions appreciated!

Hello David,

Do you have more than one Windows 7 machine in your home network? The reason I ask is that Win7 Starter Edition can only join an existing HomeGroup. Win 7 Starter cannot initiate or establish a HomeGroup.

Go to the Network and Sharing Center | Advanced Sharing Settings | and select Turn off password protected sharing . You will definitely get the request for user name and password if that switch is turned on. Also be sure that File and Printer Sharing are on.

You can also set up file sharing on selected folders on your Win7 HP by right clicking the folder, selecting the share tab and setting permissions.

I’m really begining to hate Windows 7 in general and the networking in particular. Without networking working on a particular computer then there is no point in me owning that computer.

I have been setting up networks since Win 98 days (over 10year) with complete success but I am completely baffled by Win 7.

As I’ve said before, I’m using Win 7 starter on a brand new HP Mini 210 netbook. I have tried all the previous suggestions with absolutely no success. Win 7 seems to have a mind of its own sometimes letting me access other computers, drives and files and sometimes various combinations At the moment I can access nothing either on or from my netbook, with all the other computers fully networked and working. The web is available on the netbook at all times.

Having read elsewhere that there are some pretty draconian limitations in Win 7 starter, am I wasting my time?

Assuming that I am not wasting my time, can someone please tell me how to get looged onto a standard XP workgroup

Thanks, but theses didd not help.

The first one is all about sharing a printer attached to my Win 7 machine, which I don’t have and the MS one is just telling me about all the restrictions in the starter edition.

Unless I find a solution this morning the computer goes back

Yes, there are many restrictions in the “Starter” version. I think it the the VERY bottom of the line, and has a lot stripped from it.
It appears to me that this is bases of your problem.
If you were to have a REAL copy (Home preium or better) I think you would have better thoughts about Windows 7.
