    hello again…

Went into msconfig the other day looking for newly instituted startup items; & found one w/ NO name under ‘Startup Item’ & NO info under ‘Command’…(whereby the line is completely blank):

how in the heck can I find out what this item is ???…or if it’s dangerous to my PC ?

    thanks,

Err, if the data field is blank, then what can it do, for good or for ill?!
I’ve occasionally, but rarely, found this sort of thing and I just delete without a second thought.
PS I suggest Autoruns (mainly the Logon tab) rather than MSCONFIG!

      BATcher

Plethora means a lot to me.

BATcher beat me to it. Uncheck it and run Autoruns where it MIGHT give you a better clue as to what is.

Off topic… There is no need to upload your picture to another location. You can insert the picture as part of your post. Look for the Manage attachment just below the posting text box.

      Autoruns didn’t work.

Someone else suggested running MSINFO32, however…which did work; & pointed to a program I have called ‘Registry Mechanic’.

(have no idea why it needed to load at startup, but I disabled that function, nonetheless).

      Thanks,

btw – thanks for the tip on the image file upload…I’m so used to using my own server for everything I must have missed that.

As a matter of interest how did this show Registry Mechanic? If I run misinfo32 it just shows system information such as Operating system and installed memory etc. No start up programmes that I can see?

How do you mean, “it didn’t work?”
Didn’t run or start or what?
It should extract to only three files. Autoruns.chm, Autoruns.exe and Autorunsc.exe. You don’t have to install it, just run the Autoruns.exe file and it will show you a large list of start up programs.
Scan down them to look for any mention of blank files and uncheck the boxes next to them.

BTW, your screenshot of msconfig showed the blank line WITH the box checked, but it also started to show a location ( to the right side ) in the registry where this unnamed file is located. Have you gone into regedit to find the entry?
