I got this also.  No KB4039871.  Windows 8.1.

Woody, KB4039871 and KB2976978 were expired one night ago.
KB4039871 is said to be 2017-08 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 8.1, both in 32-bit and 64-bit flavours.
I assume it was an unintended release which was quickly corrected by withdrawing that patch.

If somehow, as unlikely as it is, anyone got that patch installed, I think the best advice is to uninstall, as it is an unofficial patch at this stage. Not even in the same class with the official Preview Optional releases, which by all counts are supposed to be production-ready, but still not tested in full, and as such recommended to be installed early only in specific and rare situations.

Update: I think KB2976978 which I mentioned before was expired earlier in the month, as being old version and replaced with a new one.
Windows 2012 R2 received the same treatment like Windows 8.1 in relation to KB4039871.
My information is only related to the English language updates, which means that there is still a possibility that the update discussed to be valid for other languages, like Japanese which was mentioned in the original blog post.

Seen available on an Group-A system, updated as of mid August, this afternoon here:

      • 2017-08 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB4034681)
      • Definition Update for Windows Defender – KB2267602 (Definition 1.251.135.0)
      • August, 2017 Preview of Quality Rollup for .NET Framework 3.5, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7 on Windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2 for x64 (KB4035038)

What’s interesting is that I’m pretty sure this test system had the August update before. Strange things are afoot at the Circle-K, that’s for sure.

Here’s what WMI QFE LIST showed to be different before and after the updates were applied (which for some reason never seem to match the list shown in Windows Update). Most notably, one of the updates listed above as to be INSTALLED – KB4034681 – has DISAPPEARED from the list!

      Added:

      No longer shown:

The purpose of update KB4039871 is clear now – it’s an Update for Monthly Preview Rollup Update KB4034663 – and it addresses an issue with WSUS update metadata processing that can cause some clients to time out with a 0x8024401c error.

Update KB4039871 is expired and I can’t update. Why is that?

Cancel that! I manual installed this on my WSUS server (2012 r2) and my Windows 10 PC’s are checking in.
