    Hi,

(could anyone help me out with this one? If not I’ll need to go and dig in the resources like the ones I referred to myself in an earlier thread… feel like a total greeny)

We plan to run a MySQL database driven application (CiviCRM) at a server, but due to security issues it looks like I can’t connect to it.
I would like to use an Access front end though to provide the functionality which we might not be able to use CiviCRM for (like reports & statistics,…).
I am asked now whether I can’t import an MySQLdump in Access.
As far as I know, this isn’t possible… and will I probably need to install MySQL (server? client?) at my portable, so I can make & ODBC link to a lokal copy. Is this true? Or… can Access import MySQL anyway?

If you can’t connect to the server, how could you download anything from it, into Access or otherwise? scratch

        I’m sorry – I didn’t make myself clear enough.
The mysqldump is a plain text file (example in attachment). As far as I understand it’s a backup of the MySQL database’s structure (SQL?) and content.
Our admin mailed me this dump asking me to figure out if I couldn’t import it like that in Access. I replied that I couldn’t, but wanted to be sure – hence my question here.

Now… I decided it’s probably better just to locally install MySQL on my laptop (Windows XP)… This would allow me to ‘unpack’ the dump here into a full local backup copy of the database which I can link to using ODBC (*) without any security issues to handle, or convert to an Access database backend using software like John suggested.
So the confirmation I looked for (that I can’t import the dump file) isn’t that important anymore. I’m exploring new grounds.

        Thanks again for your time,
        Hasse

ps FWIW in addition to John’s suggestion: a couple of years ago I dumped some google search results at the board here … maybe it’s time now to figure it out what they were worth for real smile.

Presumably when you do the dump, it will be somewhere you can connect to.

I don’t know much about MySQL – is the dump still a MYSQL database, or does it dump in some other form?

I did a Google search on this and found lots of stuff for moving data between Access and MySQL such as http://www.sobolsoft.com/accessmysql/%5B/url%5D but I have nver tried to use any of them
