Yesterday, a new/never had before Wake issue, which happened I left Desktop on for 3 hrs & it eventually went to Deep Sleep/PC only looks like its Off. But, when I clicked my mouse, Desktop PC tried 20 times in 20 seconds to fully wake up until after trying twice in holding down PC’s Power Button. Then it was able to wake up & I shut down quickly in fear that it’ll start acting up again.

    * I don’t know if it’ll happen again. Or  could updating Windows to version 21H2 will add a new variable/make it harder to fix issue ?

In same Desktop when it was on Win7 Pro(up until this Sept/Oct) it went thru periods of time when it either won’t stay shutdown or will take  4 times trying different methods before staying shutdown. With a lot if help, it was fixed by unchecking some Wake to LAN Settings inside my Intel Ethernet Properties under Network Adapter by before upgrading to Win 10 Pro.

I tried to check again, but in Windows 10 Pro it/Wake to LAN Settings window looks to different for My Not Tech Savvy self  to know what to check for under Power Management Tab of Intel Ethernet.

I checked wake timers thru powercfg and there’s no wake timers.

Here’s link to my past Topic when my Desktop was on Win7 Pro. If it will help. https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/custom-windows-7-pc-wont-shutdown/

Some Info about my 2014 Custom Built Desktop: – upgraded to Windows 10 Pro (x64) Intel i7 – Motherboard brand and model: Gigabyte Ultra Durable Motherboard GA-X99-UD4 (manual edition date stamp August 2014)

Right click on the network symbol in the tray.
Choose Open network & internet settings.
      Select Ethernet.
On the right select Change adapter options.
On the ethernet adapter right click > Properties > Configure > Advanced.
Scroll down to the wake on section. Disable whatever you need.

      cheers, Paul

I’ll soon be going to bed so I only have access to my family member’s Win 10 Pro Desktop to quickly try out your steps. I can’t find the Wake On section in its Advanced tab. While scrolling down looking for anything saying Wake On, I don’t know what anything on the list means or what they do.

Also, I have no idea what to Disable to fix issue.

      Mine looks like this.

      cheers, Paul

Ok today, I checked what was listed in my Advanced tab and there’s no Wake On listed. Just like the other desktop that I checked yesterday (which never had any these types of issues)

I’m just thinking/ this popped in my head: Could Wake on not being listed because when my Desktop was on Win 7 Pro in order to fix the can’t stay shutdown issue ended up being, disabling some Wake On to LAN Settings in the Pwr Management tab under Device Manager as told to in my Topic (link pasted in this Topic)  ?   And somehow now that my Desktop is on Win 10 Pro that fix is causing this new issue.

I have attached below how mine looks like.

Check the Power Management tab and see if the adapter is allowed to wake the computer.

        cheers, Paul

        • #2430483

I Checked, the answer is Yes the adapter has a checkmark/enabled  for “Allow this device to wake computer”.

Also, the adapter has “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” enabled/checkmarked.

The only this that is unchecked/disabled for the Adapter is the “Only allow magic packet to wake computer” is unchecked/disabled

Go to Control Panel/Power Options. You can just keep using the plan shown which is the one your desktop hardware provider set up (although it has limitations) or you can instead set up your own Power Option Plan and then click on Change Settings and then on Advanced Power Settings to reach Sleep/Wake options.

      Try disabling Fast Startup

      • #2430283

I followed the steps to see of article to see how my “Choose what the power buttons do” Window looks like.

On the Last Step, under “Shutdown Settings”,  I don’t have Fast Startup…it’s not listed. Instead, what I see under my “Shutdown Settings” is a Greyed Out “Sleep with box that’s Check mark” and a Greyed Out “Lock with box that’s Check mark”.

Also, to let you know, I noticed that  “Hibernation”  is not listed under my “Shutdown Settings”.

      Hi TheFamilyIT:

Regarding Fast Startup, do you see a link that says “Change settings that are currently unavailable” near the top of the page at Control Panel | System and Security | Power Options | Change What the Power Buttons Do that you can click to configure additional or greyed-out options? See Option 1 / Step 3 of the TenForums tutorial How to Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10.

      Win-10-Pro-v21H2-Control-Panel-Power-Options-Change-Settings-Currently-Unavailable-09-Mar-2022

Regarding your older Win 7 thread Custom Windows 7 PC Won’t Shutdown, it sounds from your description that your computer would wake spontaneously after it went into Sleep or Hibernation mode. If that is correct and your upgrade to Win 10 hasn’t fixed this problem have you tried Mele20’s suggestion in post # 2430089 and looked through the Advanced settings of your current power plan (Control Panel | System and Security | Power Options | Change Plan Settings (for your current power plan) | Change Advanced Power Settings | Sleep) to check your Sleep and Hibernate settings?

I had a similar issue on my Dell Inspiron 5584 / Win 10 Pro laptop where my computer would wake exactly 180 minutes after it went into Sleep mode. I discovered my Windows Event Viewer (Event Viewer | Windows Logs | System) would log an “information only” ACPI Wake Alarm (Source: Power-Troubleshooter; Event ID: 1; Wake Source: Device -ACPI Wake Alarm) every time this happened, and if I changed the advanced Hibernate After: settings in my power plan from “180 min” (the default) to “Never” my laptop would stop waking up on it’s own when it tried to switch from Sleep to Hibernation mode. Other Inspiron 5584 users have reported the same “wake from sleep” problem, so my best guess is that there’s some hardware component in our laptops with a built-in power-saver feature that doesn’t communicate correctly with the PCIe bus on our motherboard. See my 20-Dec-2019 thread Inspiron 15 5584 Wakes After 180 Min of Sleep (ACPI Wake Alarm) in the Dell forum for further information.

      Dell-Inspiron-5584-Sleep-Hibernate-After-Never-19-Jan-2020

Just a word of caution if you decide to change your Hiberate After: settings to Never.  You said in your original post in this thread that you encountered a new problem on 06-Mar-2022 where your computer would not wake from Sleep/Hibernate mode when you clicked your mouse or pressed keys on your keyboard.  I don’t know if this new problem only happened once or if it has re-occurred since you started this thread, but you might want to try setting your Hibernate After: setting to a longer time interval (say 360 min) instead of Never for now and just see if this has any effect this has on your “wake from sleep” problems.

One other odd thing I’ve noticed about my two-year-old Inspiron 5584 is that if I run the command “powercfg /a” from an elevated command prompt I can see that my BIOS supports S3 (the old “legacy” Standby standard) but does not support Modern Standby (S0).  I don’t know if this contributes to some of my own “wake from sleep” problems , but see geoffins’ Wakey Wakey! – Inspiron 7373 Takes Ages to Wake From Sleep in the Dell forum  for a discussion on this topic.

      Win-10-v20H2-Dell-Inspiron-5584-powercfg_a-Command-25-May-2021

I also had an issue where I occasionally couldn’t wake my system from Sleep/Hibernate mode using my keyboard or mouse, and Alt-Ctrl-Del had no effect, so I would have to hold down the power button for ~ 15 sec to perform a hard shutdown.  However, I eventually noticed that this problem only occurred if I left my computer for an extended period of time and allowed it to go into Sleep mode on its own.  For some reason, if I put my system into Sleep mode manually (Start | Power icon | Sleep) before I leave my computer it always wakes correctly when I use my keyboard or mouse to bring it out of Sleep mode.

Thank you for all the info & solutions of your past similar issue. I followed steps to find Fast Startup, I clicked the link that says “Change settings that are currently unavailable” and under “Shutdown Settings”  and I saw the same greyed-out options as I mentioned in my previous reply post. No Fast Startup to be seen.

I don’t have Hibernation as an option in the “Power Menu” and it’s missing  when I  expand“Sleep”and look at “Sleep After” In“Change Advanced Power Settings” After reading on one of the links in the intro in TenFourms I saw and made me remember, that in the past before going on forums, Microsoft Tech Support was helping for my Win 7 issue, they told me to that Elevated Command Prompt to Disable Hibernation. It didn’t end up helping my Win7 issue.

After look at intro section of the TenForums tutorial link, I happen to click on its link to a Microsoft Support “Fast Startup causes hibernation or shutdown to fail in Win10 or Win 8.1” (It doesn’t sound like issue that I am dealing with anyways) but I read over it. As a not so tech savvy person, I happen to read the Pink Note Box under “Workaround” Section and it says, Disabling Fast Startup is not recommended –  What happens if I’m told to enable Fast Startup will bring back my old Win 7 Pro issue which was PC not staying  powered off after shutting down or cause my new wake up from sleep issue to get worse.

Sorry for my writing above/2nd paragraph about my reaction(as a not Tech Savvy person), after reading that Microsoft support link in the TenForums Link since I don’t really understand all what is talked about and what implications that could occur to my PC right away or cause other issue.

In my older Win 7 thread, the issue was when I wanted to Turn Off/going to start menu to click shutdown. It wasn’t a guarantee that my Desktop would stay turned off/powered off after shutting down. It would take up to 4 attempts or more before it stayed off or I had to unplug the power chord. Also, sometimes the issue will stop for a few months or less before acting up again.

      Hi TheFamilyIT:

Note that I must enable the Hibernate (Show in Power Menu) setting at Control Panel | System and Security | Power Options | Change What the Power Buttons Do if I want to see Hibernate as an option in my Start | Power icon menu. If you’ve clicked “Change settings that are currently unavailable” near the top of the page at Control Panel | System and Security | Power Options | Change What the Power Buttons Do page and the Hibernate (Show in Power Menu) setting is missing then that might be because you’ve disabled Hibernation on your system using the powercfg.exe /hibernate off command (see the MS support article How to Disable and Re-enable Hibernation on a Computer That is Running Windows).  If you aren’t sure if Hibernation has been re-enabled since you upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10 see post # 5 of the SevenForums thread How to see from commandline (!!!) if hibernation is on or off?. (note: I have Hibernation enabled on my Win 10 Pro laptop and can’t see the C:hyberfil.sys file mentioned in that thread, even when I show hidden files and folders in File Explorer.  I can see this file, however, if I use TreeSize Free and run this utility with Administrator rights).

This might be unrelated to your current problems, but did your Gigabyte Ultra Durable GA-X99-UD4 motherboard come with proprietary Gigabyte utilities for system tuning, and are those utilities still installed on your system since your upgrade to Win 10?

The overview page at https://www.gigabyte.com/ca/Motherboard/GA-X99-UD4-rev-11#ov mentions a network traffic management application called cFos Internet Accelerator, and the specs page at https://www.gigabyte.com/ca/Motherboard/GA-X99-UD4-rev-11/sp#sp mentions an APP Center with various functions like EasyTune and Fast Boot (see the Gigabyte article at https://www.gigabyte.com/microsite/369/images/system-tweaking.html for more info about these utilities). I used to use Norton as my antivirus and know of many Norton, ESET and Malwarebytes users who had to disable or these uninstall App Center (Gigabyte) utilities because the Gigbyte driver gdrv.sys used by the EasyTune utility was causing their system to become unstable and could even trigger crashes – see Phoenix365’s Norton Security Blue Screen From Background Tasks for my post about known issues with the way that these Gigabyte APP Center utilities map memory to access hardware ports.

Also note that Gigabyte’s Fast Boot utility (Win 7 and higher) mimics the behaviour of Windows’ built-in Fast Startup power option (Win 8.x and higher). I don’t know if that’s why Fast Startup isn’t listed in your Windows power settings at Control Panel | System and Security | Power Options | Change What the Power Buttons Do (i.e., if Gigabyte’s Fast Boot can override Windows Fast Startup), but I recall one user posting in the Malwarebytes forum that their Malwarebytes program would often fail to load properly at boot-up until they disabled Fast Boot from the Gigabyte APP Center (sorry, I couldn’t find a link to that thread).

I don’t know if you used the method described in The Verge article How to Upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 for Free to upgrade from Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro, but if you didn’t start with a fresh Win 10 installation then I wonder if there are remnants of your Win 7  settings and apps that are causing issues on your computer.

In Control Panel\File and folder Options on the View tab, if you UNCHECK “Hide protected system files,” then Apply and OK,  you can see the C:\hiberfile.sys in File Explorer.

Please go back afterward and re-check that option, as it shows things you do not need to see which may be confusing.
