My Win 7 Toshiba laptop won’t boot up now

I used my Win 7 laptop a couple of weeks ago and it worked perfectly…..I didn’t go on to any strange or dangerous websites that I know of, just the usual stuff …..I turned it on tonight and it would begin to boot up, then would shut itself completely off after about 5 seconds….I tried it again several times and the screen came up to choose to correct the problem or just start Windows up normally….once I clicked on either one of them, then the computer shut itself completely off again…..I have the laptop plugged in to the AC wall socket and it’s not a dead battery problem as I’ve charged the battery all the way up and still have the problem….I have no idea how to solve the problem….I’m hoping someone can help me as the laptop is almost brand new as i haven’t used it more that a couple of dozen times…..I’ve not seen this problem before and don’t know what to do

Have you tried safe mode?
Did you create a system repair disc?

I don’t know how to do Safe Mode…….I did create a system disk,,,,,there are 4 of them, that wipes everything clean and reinstall the computer to new, but I loose all my files and anti virus software

The system repair disk is different to the Toshiba Recovery disks where the latter will factory reset your computer, whereas the Repair disk when changing the boot order to boot up from the ODD first, will take you into the advanced boot options.

To boot up into the advanced boot options to select Safe Mode with Networking, tap F8 as you switch on.

If that doesn’t work then tap the spacebar at a rate of 1/sec as you switch on and that should get you into the advanced boot options.

If the machine will work in Safe Mode with Networking, download HWMonitor and that will give you the temps of your machine as a serious overheating problem will shut a machine down like that. http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/hwmonitor.html

If the temps are upper 60s+ when it is first switched on then you have a serious overheating problem and giving the machine a good blow out with a can of compressed may be sufficient.

Use the straw and when blowing into the underside air intake, insert it sufficiently to stop the fan from moving as you can damage it and give the keyboard a good blow over as well, as Toshibas also draw air in through the keyboard for cooling.

Let us know what the temps are if you are able to, but get yourself a can of compressed air from either a computer shop or the computer accessories section of a supermarket and give it a good blow out anyway as a first step.

Success, I found that removing the battery and the pressing zero and the turning the computer on I could get to the hidden partition without the computer turning off abruptly. The choices included restoring computer to factory specs or repair. I selected the repair option and the computer ran the program……when completed the computer booted up as it should. I then replaced the battery and charged it up to full. Then the laptop would run OK either on the battery or with AC.

I would suggest that you do a complete backup of your computer, now that you have it working ok.

I ended up with a Toshiba Satellite L655 that got infected [he knew it when it happened] that wouldn’t boot up when I tried to clean it. Turned out the HDD had also developed some bad sectors that couldn’t be repaired and couldn’t get to the hidden partition. I replaced the HDD, ordered the discs from Toshiba [about $30] and for fun while waiting installed Win10 Pro TB on it, works quite nicely. Only issue is Win10 is picking up a PCI Simple Communications Controller which usually is a Dial-Up Modem which it doesn’t have. I did let it get updated drivers for the graphics to get more than 1024×768 resolution. Win10 picked up and installed the HP Officejet printer on my Network but I had to get the software for the HP Laserjet, use the Win8.1 version. Both printers connect by Ethernet to the Router.
