That’s really a hoot, Dennis!
I especially loved this quote which “fits” me like a glove. I just installed a new printer and don’t want to take the old one out of service until I’ve used this new one for awhile, so…
”This is how I deal with the situation these days: If I get a new device, I just stuff any new cables right into the swamp of existing ones. And if I need to remove a cable, I optimistically pull on it, like a madman.”
And, down in my “swamp” I have a very difficult time seeing if there is an empty electrical plug socket in my surge protector! -

AskWoody LoungerApril 4, 2009 at 12:18 am #1155110I solved the problem of having a maze of cables or the use of cable ties behind my PC and under the desk. (Also back of entertainment system)
I went to a local auto supply store and bought a bunch of Spark Plug Wire bridges, which allow you to keep your wires in a very neat arrangement without permanently tying them down with wraps.
Also the best benefit is if I need to change a cable, all I have to do is just un-snap that cable from its position on the bridges.
There made to allow the wire to be held very securely (about one third the diameter of a regular Spark Plug Wire) so that you wires under the hood (bonnet in some places) do not move around with vibrations.
They come in a variety of different sizes and colors.

AskWoody LoungerApril 7, 2009 at 10:45 pm #1155550I thought I had the fix to all of the cable mess when I discovered I needed a new printer. In researching the wonderful new models of all-in-one’s from HP, I discovered they are now made to operate in a wireless fashion! How cool is that? Upon purchase and bringing home the new ‘baby’, unpack and pull out the handy-dandy quick start guide. It goes through the standard setup, plug in, power-up stuff and then gets to the part about connecting the ‘wireless’ functionality. Step 1: plug printer into computer using enclosed USB cable. Step 2: install printer software using wired/wireless network settings. Step 3: if so desired, unplug USB cable and access printer through wireless printer driver.
If I wanted to set this up in my attic from the get-go, would I have needed to move my computer within cable range to load the driver? Me no understand some concepts very well…
