My 56k access at 31.2k

When I am dialed up my taskbar icon always indicates 31.2kbs unless I’m registering a software or something. I have checked my modem setup and it’s at max 115k, etc. I have a Dell PIII, 256 mg ram, U.S. Robotics V90 with Telephony, 60 gb drive with 50 gb available on Win ME. I have had no problems whatsoever with the machine other than wondering why I seem to only go 31.2k. Thank you and have a great weekend!!!

have you tried contacting your internet provider some of the setting may need to be changed to increase performace
also in my house the phone wires had to be replaced before we could get a decent logon

In the United States, 56k access is at best only 48. The reason for this is FCC regulations in place do not allow for dialup connectivity to exceed this number, thus you will never hear of connections faster than this.

There are literally hundereds of things that can have adverse effects on dialup performance. Anything from small appliances near your computer, to the condition of your phone lines, to the maximum speed your ISP’s hub uses, to net congestion, etc, etc, etc… (these are the most common) For dialup connectivity, 31k is the average. in general people connect anywhere from 21k-42k or somewhere in between. If you’re looking to get faster access, and have the , you may want to look into Cable, DSL, or ISDN access. (chances are details on these can be found at your ISP’s website, if they’re any good.

You can call your ISP to see what they can do to ‘Optimize’ your connection, but all they’re going to do is play with some modem switches on your machine. I.E there’s nothing they can do at thier end to boost your performance.

right now i’m logged on at 50666
we were getting logons at 24 and sometimes 28 before doing the things listed above. these things may not work for everyone but we saw a big difference

My in-laws (who live next street over) have the exact same system and connect to the exact same provider at 50k while I stay at 31.2k. I set their system up same as mine. They do use the 6 foot phone cord that came with the system. I use a 20 cord I purchased last year. I’ll check on that. Thank you for your advise.
