    Best Vista Freeware Apps
    ——————————

    Hi all,

In my free time, I enjoy browsing for freeware applications on the web that can do useful tasks. I thought I’d compile a quick list of the best 10 applications that I have come about for Windows XP or Vista. I can rate all the below apps as 5 star. They are COMPLETELY FREE (ie: NOT shareware) with no spyware or annoying adware attached. They are completely safe and downloadable from trusted sites. I am currently using all the below on my personal laptop.

If you enjoy useful freeware applications…I will encourage you to have a look at these superb apps!

Google the name of the application to find the Home Page and Download options.

    Audacity 1.3
    ASAP Utilities 4.2.10
    AVG Antivirus 8.5
FileMenu Tools 5.5 (Context right click menu file manager)
    FxFoto (Image editing)
    EssentialPIM (Personal Information Manager)
Hott Notes 4 (Desktop sticky notes)
ObjectDock 1.90 (An amazing desktop Program Launcher…lots of tweaks)

      Hi Rudi,

I guess there will always be some who disagree with parts of your list, and that’s what I am going to do now.

I would have agreed with your inclusion of AVG a year ago, but am finding it less and less ‘co-operative’ lately – and that’s using both the free and paid for versions.

There is an issue with conflict with Acer software on their machines which I have run into again with recent updates to 8.5. And I also find that it takes up a lot of processor power to run the full. daily scans. On my machine (with over a million files) the daily scan was taking over 14 hours. That just wasn’t working for me anymore.

I have moved to Avast and find it much better. Updates are less intrusive and require less reboots. Real time scanning happens in the background when my processor is idle.

Sounds like an advertisement! But it works for me.

        Hi Johanna,

You are welcome to disagree. My software list is absolutely personal and I was not intending to debate its content, however, debate is what makes this website interesting .

I am running AVG 8.5 on my Acer laptop and am more than happy about it. I have also set the scans to run at computer startup, so it is not so frequent as everyday. (Although the software disrecommends it.) When the scan runs however, I will agree with you that it does take a bit of processing power. I do see a significant slow down in PC performance, and I often stop the scan just to get my work done.

Thanks for your comments. I hope you find some interest and benefit in some of the other applications I mentioned.
