Now.  I will be the first to say I hope you NEVER have a need for this, but I also know that sometimes all forms of social media needs a mute button or time out.

I’ve added a new function to the forums called “Mute user” or “Mute forum”.

Please note that you cannot mute any moderator on the forum, it’s just for forum users. But if you want to have a “time out” this feature allows you to tailor the forums.

Let me know what you think?

It will be helpful to me for highly active topics that aren’t relevant to my hardware or technology interests / usage.

I would like an option to mute sub forums.

I guess it’s all right to provide the option to mute users, but I don’t see ever using it. I can see it leading to peculiar/confusing thread situations where a participant I had not muted was replying to something written by a participant whom I had muted—especially if the post they were replying to wasn’t quoted in the reply.

According to the documentation at Mute Users with GD bbPress Toolbox Pro – Dev4Press Knowledge Base  — “For every logged-in user, the plugin will modify all topics and reply queries, and it will remove all posts by muted users. This will essentially hide all posts from muted users in the whole forum.”

I don’t always have the same opinion as others that post to the various forums/topics but I have never felt the need to excise any user’s posted content from an entire forum.

If you don’t like or are not interested in the posts made by a particular user don’t read them and move on.

Mute Users seems to me like personal censorship on steroids.

I’ve had a few requests for this feature. I’m putting it as an option.  You don’t have to use it and honestly I hope you don’t.  We try our best to moderate but with a calm tone.  I feel there should be room for respectful discussions.

I agree with Cybertooth and I would not use this unless there were too many political or religious views being put into a user’s posts.  This has only happened once recently (political) and I haven’t seen any more since then.  I enjoy coming to this unique website for some “respite from the madness” and to be able to communicate with the intelligent people here.

One question, is there a way to “un-mute” the user(s) you’ve muted?

I will most likely not use this option. The AW forum has been a good place for diversity and most importantly in getting answers to complex issues concerning one operating system or another. Since Woody brought it to the Internet forum spotlight, it has continued to surpass any I’ve seen in the way of getting a direct answer or enabling members to contribute their own knowledge and opinion. All in good form, and Susan continues to carry out the whole aspect of respect and the expertise of management. Valuable contributions from Managers, MVPs and Members is by far the best. As noted by Cybertooth and EricB, putting out an option that limits a participant’s field of interest or involvement, may create a big gap and missing parts to areas that merge with the whole tech world community here. I comb through the many subjects unrelated to my personal use of technology to get a feel for what others are sharing and contributing on their side of the fence. “Mute” buttons IMHO are unnecessary. Skip – don’t mute – what doesn’t suit your needs at the moment. Never know, that mundane unrelated subject could be a device that may land on your desktop someday.
