Multiple Windows Defender updates offered: One fails to install

Over the past few days when I run Windows update, I am offered _two_ Definition updates (with different Definition numbers). For example, this morning, I was offered 1.197.2102.0 and 1.197.2109.0). I always install Defender updates immediately when offered, but when I try to install, only the lower numbered definition installs, and the second fails. Checking again, presents the second update which installs without problem now.

This has now happened several times, with the same behavior each time. My understanding is that these updates are cumulative. I am wondering if I should just not select the “older” update and only install the “later” update, which I assume would install fine.

In the year-plus I have been using Win8 Windows Defender, I had never seen this behavior before. (I am running Win8.1 Pro/64.)

Is anyone else seeing this? Any idea of what is going on?

I had one fail but it was a couple of days old and the next several worked fine.

Recently, there have been lots of problems with some of Windows updates. I would suggest that you run “sfc /scannow” and see if you don’t have any corrupt files with reference to the CBS.log in the results. If you do, try to open CBS.log in C:windowsLogsCBS.log. When you double-click on the latter, you will be greeted with an “Access denied” error message. Close it and instead Right-click on it (the CBS.log) and click on Properties in the dialog box. In the CBS.log properties window, click on the security tab, click on “Continue” when the UAC prompt shows up. Now you will be in the “Permissions for Cbs.log” dialog box, click on the ‘Add’ button and write down “Everyone” in the field under “Enter the objects names to select”. After that click OK and you will be back to the previous window (Permissions for CBS.log). There, tick the boxes under Allow for permissions for Everyone. Click Ok to close all windows and “yes” to the windows security prompt. Now, you should be able to open the CBS. log file by double-clicking on it.

You should be now in the CBS.log-Notepad window. There in the menu bar, click on Edit, then on “Find” and write down “Corrupt” in the “Find what” field. That should bring up the corrupt files. Write down what it says and post back.

The reason why I am inviting you to go that route is because I had the same problem and every time a Windows update failed, that would also sometimes corrupt some system files.

It’s quite possible that the first one was a pre-requisite for the second, which could explain why the second failed until the first had been installed.

Could also be the update process couldn’t get a good ‘net connection. I noticed a few for Windows Defender didn’t install but did a few hours later in the same day.

I totally agree with Berton, it could also be a network connection problem. In this case, one should check the network adapter settings to see if your TCP/IPv4 or TCP/IPv6 are set to obtain an IP address and a DNS server address automatically.
