Please send me any info regarding my new plan to install 5 different Operating
Systems on my big HP Box. Using Partition Magic to setup the partitions and
System Commander for boot up how does following lineup sound:
Drive 1: WIN98 SE, Drive 2: WIN ME, Drive 3: WIN 2000 Pro,
Drive 4: WIN XP, Drive 5: Linux

AskWoody LoungerOctober 12, 2001 at 3:41 pm #546431moniq, thanx for your help. System Commander is a boot manager that allows you to choose which partition
that you want to boot from at startup; it makes the partition that you choose ‘active’ at that point and all the
remaining partitions ‘extended’. System Commander is pretty neat. Try it if you need to boot from different
partitions. So in answer to your question, System Commander makes only one particular partition (which
you choose) active at any one time.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 11, 2001 at 6:04 pm #546242Hi
I boot into four different choices, all on the one HD but in different partitions. (2kP, XPP, SE, 2kRec).
Personally I would not recommend ME,( too bugged) and would use FAT32 partitions (selectable at install time) rather than NTFS5.
If you are going to use all of them, you will need a large HD (40Gb minimum) and considerable cash outlay for software versions that are compatible with each OS.Luck!

AskWoody LoungerOctober 12, 2001 at 4:43 pm #546444MerC, Thanx for your post. What system is ‘2kRec’? Couldn’t figure that one out (am real OLD guy and not smart
anymore). Have had reports from our IT guys here at the Depot that XPP is not the way to go, rather, one shud
go with XPHE (home edition); what is your feeling on this?OK, that said, here is the ‘ rest of the story’. In my original desperate plea for help I neglected to tell you that
I bought my new HP box off the shelf last August from CompUSA in Reno (NV) while I was going to a VBA
class at the Engineering College at UNR (University of Nevada Reno). I ventured out into the ‘real strange
land’ of Reno in search of a new IBM box and to my utter astonishment I found out that IBM had pulled
everything they own off all retail shelves. I finally stumbled into the IBM Sales Office in Reno to demand
an explanation of this incredible behavior. The head sales engineer there politely explained that IBM had
gone to the Gateway – Dell model of Direct Marketing of all computers. He said he would be happy to order
a new box for me from the IBM factory in South Carolina and that it would take 8 to 10 days to get the thing
built and shipped out to Reno. At that point I went to the nearest big Hotel Casino and had three Scotch
on the Rocks to try to calm down my raging madness and to try and figure out what to do next.
I decided that IBM had taken the last stage out of town and that I would go back to CompUSA and Circuit
City in search of any other new box that I could find.I found that the only stuff left on the shelves was Sony, Compaq and HP. Since I had worked (in my far
distant past) at the Roseville Networks Division of HP and know that HP has an incredible fascination
with quality control I decided that I would take the biggest HP box I could find off the shelf, that day.
So that is how I got this monster HP box (HP Pavilion 9880). Well, it came right off the shelf with what
it had. Namely ME for the operating system. I was well aware that ME is the worst of the worst from
Redmond but had no “CHOICE” in the matter. Alright, I’m not going to say what my feelings are about
Microsoft. I did this once already on the Access Board and got slapped by Charlotte (actually it was
kind of fun – she could do it somemore – anytime). So, now I need to FIX my operating system on the big HP. It has an 80 gig HD so I figured I would load
every operating system I could come up with and see what I liked the best and then kill the rest.
So, what I am going to do is basically build a test set. I have SE, ME and Linux but need to get Win2k and
XP (of some flavor, P or HE?). OK, at that point, ME is like gone, buddy (similar to when my idol,
Steven Seagal, shows up on the screen). My last Q for U is what do I go for, FAT32 or NTFS5? I had reports from our (now, famous) IT guys
at the Depot this week that I should go with NTFS5. As for the cash outlay, when you are FORCED
to deal with Microsoft you might as well just send your credit card to Redmond. -

AskWoody LoungerOctober 12, 2001 at 6:56 pm #546476..yes, I’d go along with that, even for FAT32. This was my choice, as I could use 3rd party for all the security I need. FAT32 allows all your systems to access each others’ files. I would tend to suggest the Professional version – you never know when you might need to network – provided money is no object. If it is, I reckon Win2kP is your best bet – not as much need for excess cash outlay on new apps.
2kRec is the Win 2000 Professional Recovery Module, which you can choose to have come up in the boot menu to allow you to do deep repairs – if you know what you’re doing – which I don’t really – but have not needed it yet. Win2k is as stable as they come.
Age? Nothing with legs is older than me…

AskWoody LoungerOctober 13, 2001 at 8:47 am #546549MerC, my last post was to moniq, but i got confused (again) wit dis new
fangled website thingy an didn’t put her name on that post.yes, MerC, networking is a REAL big out here at the Depot, like, strate from DA
(Dept of the Army – Pentagon).Money CANNOT be an object if u r dealing wit anything from Redmond becuz they
own it all (basically) an u pay wat dey ask.I had ‘mucho grande’ advice from our famous IT guys at the Depot to go wit
Win2kP.Wow – HOW much does this 2kRec thingy cost? I bet A LOT!
Hey, MerC, I got MSOfficeXP (Developer Edition) for a mere $800. I really hope
that Big Bill is enjoying this (I’m sure he is). So, will OfficeXP work “OK” wit
Win2k an WinXP? I also still use MSOffice97 (the Army is real slow on updates
to software) so, that, is the real reason behind my partition for SE.Thanx VERY much for ur input.
I think that I am older than u. My legs still work, sort of (except for my left
knee which was destoyed in ’75 while skiing downhill at Alpine Meadows
(near Lake Tahoe) and I hit an icy patch at about 65 mph but my left ski
binding did not come out resulting in my left ski being stuck in the snow
with my body going one way and my left leg being stuck by the ski.
Guess what happened to my left knee? (My doc said that he wud not be
responsible for my left leg if I ever got on skiis again)God, the WOPR Lounge is totally awesome. I still don’t believe that this
is free! Please charge me something for this totally excellent service.
(Tell Eileen that she could buy a new Porsche 911) That ought to do it.My best to you MerC,
Tom (a very old, bald man) -

AskWoody LoungerOctober 13, 2001 at 9:07 am #546550Hi Rocky
“my last post was to moniq”
I sort of guessed that, when you called her sweetheart. Not many old, bald men refer to me in that way (more’s the pity?)I guess money’s no object then. I haven’t gone beyond Office 2000, but from what I read (bugs apart) Office XP works on all the modern platforms. (Don’t know about Win 95, though). Anyway, Windows XP is the best thing since avocado vinaigrette. You’ll love it, and wish you were twenty again.
afair : the win rec option can be selected when Win 2kP is installed. Doesn’t need to be bought separately.
Agree with you re the Lounge. Mind you, it’s the sort of place that once you start hanging around, you can forget the golf and football (and any other TV).
