Using Windows XP PRo and Win 98, my Word XP and 2000 have always opened up as complete separate instances of Word when more than one document is open, which allows me to tile them vertically using the right click option from the windows taskbar. Now it has changed behavior so only one instance of Word opens with multiple documents. What have I changed to do this? I’ve looked for this setting, never found it in the past.

    Thanks

      Select Tools/Options…
Activate the View tab if necessary.
Check the box Windows in Task Bar (or something like that, I’m translating back from Dutch into English). It is the top right check box in the View tab.
      Click OK.

Note 1: the windows in the task bar are only cosmetic. I reality, only a single occurrence of Word is running. If you start the Task Manager, you will see a separate task for each open document in the Applications tab, but only a single Winword.exe in the Processes tab. Up to and including Word 97, Word always showed a single icon in the task bar, but Microsoft decided to emulate a single document interface starting with Word 2000. In Word 2002, you can choose.

Note 2: regardless of the Windows in Task Bar setting, you can arrange/tile windows using the Window menu in Word.

Thanks, I see it now. However, the windows arrange all only does horizontal tiling as far as I can tell. I do seem to remember a tile or cascade option in the past, but there is none now.

Have you look under Tools/Options/View/Windows in taskbar? If so, & it doesn’t change, take a look at this article.
      Cheers,
