I need to burn data DVD’s containing more files than will fit on a single DVD. Can anyone suggest a free burning program which will span multiple DVD’s?
Thanks,
Ivan

I need to burn data DVD’s containing more files than will fit on a single DVD. Can anyone suggest a free burning program which will span multiple DVD’s?
Thanks,
Ivan
Ivan,
Hello..How large are the “files” ? Would it be possible to “Zip” (compress) the folder files before “burning” them to DVD? Regards Fred
Fred,
The files are not large, but there are many of them in a somewhat complex folder substructure. I know I could split them up manually, but it would be very convenient to just select the top folder and copy the whole structure to DVD’s.

Ivan ,
Then what about compression ? http://www.7-zip.org/and then copying to DVD . Are they larger than 4.5GB? Regards Fred

Use a compression program like 7zip to save the folder structure and segment the archive in to 4350 megabyte (4.36 gigabyte) pieces i.e. spanning. All good compression utilities support this. You’ll notice I said 10MB short just to ensure the part sizes fit on a single layer DVDR +/-.
Set compression to “Store / minimum” as you won’t be gaining much in compression. This will save you time and then burn the segments on to multiple dvds.
To extract data from the archive you will have to have all parts available.
Fred,
Compression won’t help. These are all videos and are already compressed. Using compression wouldn’t get them down to the size of a single DVD. I know programs like I need exist. I used to have a backup program from Genie-Soft which spanned DVD’s. When it reached the end of a DVD it simply split the file it was backing up and continued on to the next DVD. Restoring required rejoining the split file, but that was not a problem. I could buy the program again, but I find it hard to believe there is not a freeware program which will do this. It involves nothing more than copying a bunch of files to DVD’s.
