Hi all. Hopefully you guys will be able to help me out with this problem I’m having with Word for Mac 2011.

So, I’m a student, and I like to make outlines using my class materials. I have previously been doing this using the “multilevel list” function. However, recently, it hasn’t been working as it is supposed to. Usually, it works out like this: I’m on “1.” I press enter. Takes me to “2.” I press tab, it gives me “a” instead of “2.” The “a” is also indented, along with the text. However, what is actually happening is that when I press “tab,” it just tabs the cursor over without giving me “a.” I tried Microsoft via remote desktop, and they wanted $99 + tax to help me troubleshoot. Nope to that one.

So far, I’ve tried making new lists; uninstalling Office and reinstalling it (using both the version provided by my school AND re-downloading it in the Microsoft Store online.) I’m kind of out of ideas, here. My school offers tech support, but I’d rather not be without my laptop if I can manage it.

Any help would be much appreciated. I’ve attached an example below. And I’m going to kindly ask everyone to reaaaaally dumb things down for me. I was raised with technology, but I’m far from a “techie.” Thanks!!

Here are the steps for fixing this on a PC; I hhope they work on a Mac: File tab > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options > AutoFormat As You Type tab. Put a check in the box for Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces.

Pam! Praise Jesus! That worked. I have been pulling my hair out for weeks not being able to make outlines. And I’m not sure how that got unchecked, as I have been able to make them in the past!! Thank you so much, you are a SAINT!
