msconfig Key Shortcut (Win XP Pro)

Is there a key combination that will bring up the msconfig utility without having
to put msconfig in the command line as for example Ctrl+Shift+Escape will
bring up Task Manager?

Hi
If you had a keyboard with hotkeys you could do it, but why bother? If you use it all that often put it on the Quicklaunch toolbar, then it’s always within easy reach. Needless to say, that’s where mine is. It even has its own icon….

Merc Thanks.
I had been wanting to find the file name for the msconfig utility. I did a search
and found it and then was able to send it to the desktop and I also found a number of articles
on msconfig I had forgotten I tucked away in different places and was able to gather them
up in the folder. Then I went into what I call the intrinsic XP Icon stash by right clicking
the folder and going to properties–msconfig wasn’t listed, but came up on the menu
when I typed it in so I was able to get the msconfig icon for the folder.
I wanted to ask you about one thing though. When you said you shortcutted it, I wasn’t
sure how you did it, so I tried making a shortcut by using the “shortcut wizard.” So I right
clicked on the desktop and put in MSCONFIG UTILITY in the shortcut name to see what
would happen. The shortcut that appeared led to a System Folder with several system
dll’s (none the msconfig file) in it.
Since C:msconfigmsconfig.exe is the file name, and C:msconfig is the target
name, is that what I should have put in for the name in the shortcut wizard to get that
to work to find the right shortcut?
Also how did you go about shortcutting it to the desktop/quickstart. I know you can
drag anything from the desktop to the quickstart, but how did you shortcut it to your desktop?

I assume Pro is the same as Home in this case.
Right click desktop, click new shortcut,
In location of the file, type c:windowssystem32dllcachemsconfig. enter
name the shortcut, and finish out.
drag the shortcut to the quick launch bar and it should be there.

Wizard, schmizard. Life’s too short for all that : simply find msconfig.exe (mine’s in C:WindowsPCHEALTHHELPCTRbinaries) LClick it and drag it to your Desktop or QuickLaunch bar, choosing the ‘Create Shortcut here’ option from the Menu which will appear when you release it.
If you have a multiple boot system, be sure to use the msconfig program for the OS you’re currently using, as they are not interchangeable.

You replied to the wrong post. Mine was an answer to “defrag” who posted the original question re: msconfig. I said basically the same thing as you did.

The easiest way to create desktop shortcut is to locate file (using Search) then right-click file, select Send To, then select Desktop (create shortcut) from Send To menu. A shortcut will then be created on desktop w/o further effort on your part. Just tried this with msconfig.exe for demo purposes. The shortcut properties created by using Send to > Desktop are illustrated on attached pic. On my PC (WIN XP Home Ed) msconfig.exe is located in C:WINDOWSPCHEALTHHELPCTRBinaries folder. Note that the shortcut TARGET for an executable is NOT the folder where the file resides, the target is the executable file itself, as illustrated below. The folder is the shortcut’s target LOCATION. Using the Create Shortcut “wizard”, in my opinion, is doing things the hard way – I rarely if ever use it.

PS – Forgot to mention, once shortcut is created, right-click shortcut, select Properties then you can create keyboard shortcut in the Shortcut Key box.
