• MS Validation Plugin (FF 1.5)

Hope this hasn’t been posted elsewhere. Just got back from a trip to Buffalo, and have been away from the boards for a couple of weeks. Just downloaded a file from Microsoft’s Download Center, and was pleasantly surprised to find that Microsoft now has a plugin for Firefox that fixes the Genuine Windows Validation issue. It automatically retrieves and installs the plugin; after that, FF 1.5 is able to download from the MS site w/o a problem. Don’t know if it works in Microsoft Update — I doubt it will. But, it is nice not to have to validate my own copy of Windows every time I want to download a file from MS!

Are you saying that following the installation of this Firefox “plugin” (it doesn’t appear to be an ‘extension’) you don’t have to run the GenuineCheck.exe program any longer?

      Hi LR,

Where do we locate this plug-in? I’ve run a search of MS download site but I am apparently not putting in the right search terms. Thanks!!

        Hi Skitterbug

You can download and Save the plugin at this link.
        You’ll need JavaScript allowed.
Click “OK” in the first popup then you can choose to Install or Save.

        Have a Great day!!!

Thanks Ken for the link. The download installed just fine according to the little “test” on MS’s page and then I gave Tony’s file a go just to see what would happen. MS didn’t challenge my request and I could download their file without having to go through validation again! thumbup I’ll put your link in my bookmarks and the validation download file in my “to keep” folder! yep

          cheers

Is there any way to determine what plug-ins are installed, and the version numbers?

            Thanks
            Chris

              Chris

              Tools|Options|Downloads and select Plug-ins…

Perhaps it’s because I don’t understand Latin, but it seems I getting a different dialog box to you.

I don’t see Plug-ins; if I click “View & Edit Actions”, there is no sign of the Validation Plugin…

Whoops, my mistake, I did not read that you were on FF 1.5. have you tried typing about:config in the address bar it should give you a list of your configuration with a list of your plug ins…I did it in 1.0.7 and did not get version history. It may be different in FF 1.5.

Enter about:plugins in the address bar to view details of plug-ins.

The plug-in has been around for about 2 months and does not work with Microsoft Update.

For those who want to try it you can either wait until you need to download a file that requires validation, or get it from Windows Genuine Advantage Plug-in installation

To try out the plug-in, a download that requires validation is Windows Journal Viewer 1.5
