I have installed the MS beta spyware protection on a few machines to see how it performs.

What I cant see is how to change the settings that allow or disallow the installation of software. For instance, on one machine, the popup told me that it allowed Messenger to start itself when windows starts. The popup does not give me a chance to allow or disallow this change.

I explicitly do not want messenger to start. My guess is that MS thinks that MS products are safe and will allow them, but I’ve been hanging around this forum for too long to trust that.

Anyone got any ideas or similar experience?

[/indent] I don’t think you can allow or disallow the execution of any software that is not in the database of recognized spyware. After all, this is an anti-spyware product and Messenger is not spyware. Would you really want it asking your permission to start every legitimate application on your computer? You have other options to limit what executes upon start up.

I agree with John. If you are looking for something to control what gets added to your startup entries check out Mike Lin’s Startup Monitor. If you want to examine and control what has already been added to your startup entries check out Sysinternals – Autoruns.
