My first indication of trouble was that Microsoft Photo Editor would not start when I double-click on a jpeg file. I thought that maybe I would be able to fix or reinstall the program by going to Add or Remove Programs. When I double-click on either ‘Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Small Business’ or ‘Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Disc 2’ I get the following error message “The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it”. Don’t really know what that means so I next got out the original CDs but when I put the first one in the drive all it does is play the brief music file and it does not autoplay. Same thing if I go to My Computer and double-click on the drive with the disc. What’s up?
BTW I can start Word, Excel & Publisher no problem from the shortcut bar.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 20, 2007 at 4:58 pm #1056913It is famous “lost installation source” bug. Copy entire CD to a separate folder on your hard drive and point Setup to this folder.
Remember: if you install Office 2000, Office XP, Office 2003, (and possibly Office 2007 also?) from CD, than install any security update from Office Update website, Setup will not recognize your CD anymore…

It’s not that I don’t trust you but I checked Google, the Microsoft Knowledge Base as well as the Office Online Discussion Group and there was NO reference whatsoever to a “lost installation source” bug. Your solution seems plausible if not rather drastic. Would you mind pointing me to any other references of users experiencing the same problem?

AskWoody LoungerMarch 20, 2007 at 8:02 pm #1056953I don’t think it’s drastic to create a folder on your hard drive and copy your Office CD into it. ?? This advice has been given here since the early days of Office 2000. If it doesn’t work, you can delete the folder.
Here’s another potential cause, if you are running without full administrator privileges on your computer: You receive an “Unable to run this command” error message when you try to start Office 2000 programs (MSKB 258197).

You really need to get out more. The suggestion made to copy the disc to your hard drive is a basic installation technique used all over the world. Many IT departments create a third partition called Source and copy all programs and drivers to it and install everything from there. This is especially valuable to laptop users that have a breakdown when they are traveling. It is also makes things easier when a desktop breaks down and the IT guy walks by 1,000 other computers to fix yours he can be confident that all needed program info will be there not back in another building. The home user benifits by not having to locate the disc and risk scratching or damaging or for that matter remembering where those pesky discs were put for safe keeping. The benifit with regards to Office 2000 is that when you go to Office Update you never need to put in your discs as the installation source is always availabe to Windows and the updates are completed seamlessly without user intervention. -

Aha!
Now I get it! (Sorry for the late reply)

AskWoody LoungerMay 4, 2007 at 6:42 pm #1063685Not too long back I also had a MS Photo Editor problem. When I went to open a photo, the MS Photo Editor would open but only show up down in the taskbar. Clicking on it in the taskbar wouldn’t bring the program up. If your problem is the same, the trick is to right click on the MS Photo Editor in the taskbar and choose Maximize.

AskWoody LoungerApril 11, 2007 at 12:08 am #1060202Rule Number 1 … before installing any program copy the entire cd or set of installation files to another partition, drive or folder on your hard drive, also to a folder on a network drive – create a text file with the CD Key in it.
I run a small busines with 25 computers … not big enough to have an on-site techie. All our software is licenced but before we put in place the business rule above we had to locate the “correct CD, install key” or whatever.
Copying the stuff to the local PC means that we no longer have to scratch around to find the correct install disk. Also particularly useful for the 5 laptops we run.
