MS Office problem after using Revo Uninstaller

Hope you can help . . .

Today I used Revo Uninstaller to uninstall a preview version of CorelDraw.

Now when I double click an Office app or a Word-Excel-PowerPoint file, I first get a pop up that says “preparing to install . . .” and then a second one that says “Please wait while Windows configures MS Office Home and Student 2007”. The progress bar blasts across the popup and the app or file opens.

I popped the Office CD in the drive and did a “repair” and then went to “Windows Update”, did a search for updates, but was told there were none available.

Any thoughts?

Is this a full install of Office Home and Student or also a trial/preview version as Corel was? Is this a new PC? Have you used these Office apps prior to this? Not that it makes much difference, but what version of Windows?

Does this happen after the repair install as well?

From all I can find this would suggest a faulty installation. You might try to uninstall Office, then reinstall Office 2007. The repair install may not have fixed the corrupted files(s).

Thank you for your reply. To answer your questions:
It is a full install of Office – not a trial version.
The PC is 2-3 years old and Office was working without a flaw until the Corel Draw uninstall.
I am running Windows 7 home premium 64 bit.
Yes, the issue is still there after the repair was done.
I agree with your prognosis – I guess I wll uninstall and reinstall MS Office.
I wanted to avoid that as I will then have to reset everything – the default folders where doc – xls – ppt files are saved, toolbars, etc.

Many of those default folders, etc may actually be preserved. I would use the Windows Uninstaller. There may be options to leave settings in place. Even if not there may be settings left in place???????? Sorry for the problems. There may have been some common files between the two apps that were deleted by Revo. I’ve never had it happen, but it is possible.

Hello All,

Well, the saga is at it’s end and we’ll never know what happened, I guess, but I have my suspicions.

First I uninstalled MS Office and then reinstalled it.

That actually worsened the issue as after the reinstall, when I would open Excel, I would get a pop up that simply said “stdole32.tlb” and although Excel-Word-PowerPoint would all load, loading was now incredibly slow.

So, I Googled stdole32.tlb and found lots of Forums that had threads pertaining to it – dating back to NT4 and forward to Win7. They all dealt with editing the Registry and giving permissions to “everyone” in a multitude of keys – all pertaining to various versions of Excel.

I tried a few of the edits which did nothing to improve the issue, so I rolled back the drive using Macrium Reflect. The image I went back to was dated just prior to installing Corel Draw, which was the program I was uninstalling using Revo Installer when my anguish started . . .

I didn’t lose much – the image was less than a month old and [fortunately] I back up data files EVERY DAY.

So, we live and learn – I know a lot of “Loungers” love Revo but not me, thank you.

Oh, BTW, my suspicions on what happened is that after Revo did the uninstall using the program’s uninstaller, a couple of items appeared when it reached the stage where it searched the Registry for “left overs”. One was a Shortcut link [no big deal] and two others pertained to links involving “.LIB” – I stupidly told it to go ahead and here I am telling the war story!

I love Imaging. I have restored from Images dozens of times. Did I mention I love Imaging!!! I still suspect that Corel must have used something in the common files that were in common with Office. I have no idea what. I am one of those people that do love Revo. In fact I use the Pro edition. Unfortunately there is no one app that has 100% lovability.

I am glad you got the problem fixed.

Have I mentioned, “I LOVE IMAGING!!!!”

I used Revo faithfully and love it. Only 1 problem I faced was when I used it to uninstall Windows Live something or other. Man, did it mess up my Microsoft Office so bad, I had to uninstall and re-install. I know your pain.

Some of these products are so intertwined, you have to be real careful when uninstalling. Unfortunately it’s difficult to know what’s connected to what.

Revo by default creates a system Restore point prior to the uninstall. I suspect that you could have recovered by doing a System Restore after you initially discovered the Office issue. Of course, an image backup would also have worked had you made one but few of us think to do that for every uninstall operation.

Word 2007 requres that OPA12.bak be available in two places. Some cleanup programs regard this file as a temporary file to be erased. If this file is erased, then you will get the “reinstall” and “configure” nonsense when you first try to bring up Word. Just make sure that this file is never deleted.

I keep seeing people recommending Revo Uninstaller, but I have always had problems with it on test machines.

Revo Uninstaller, other third-party uninstallers, and other cleanup utilities often cause more problems than they fix. Try uninstalling programs with normal methods via the Control Panel first.

Always backup your system before making major changes or installing new software.

I suggest you post the question in the relevant Corel forum, not because I expect any dazzling derring-do but because that way you will have more than one gang of troubleshooters working on it at the same time, and they may have heard of it where this gang may not.

I don’t know if your (trial) time is up, but I suspect not, which means that you can (theoretically) re-install the trial and let it time out on its own. I think the terms of the trial specify that ‘some’ of the functionality will be lost, and I’d love to know what is and what isn’t. (I have it too, but I have already purchased the disk version of it and won’t know my serial number until that arrives.)

As for Backup Backup Backup, observant Loungers, in certain parts of the world, at least, may have seen a TV ad for, um, toilet paper… Rochester isn’t that far away.

That having been said, then for heaven’s sake, if you have a valid pre-trial image then that is your course of first resort. Restore and update, but first get a printout of the Revo Pro list of programs installed since the date of the trial install so you know what new programs, if any, you should re-install.

And I have NEVER had trouble with Revo Uninstaller or CCleaner. I will second the advice to backup prior to making changes.

I believe many problems are caused by our individual setups more than the apps. In fact, on this forum you are the first I remember posting about having these problems with Revo. Others have posted about CCleaner.

Don’t overlook the fact that Revo, or at least Revo Pro, has three settings: mild, medium and strong (or whatever). For a truly mild and ultra safe uninstall, use the uninstall in Control Panel. So it leaves a bit of junk behind, so what? You may want that junk in case of a reinstall of the program, or a forgotten serial number, or an upgrade to a newer version. For that matter, many programs have their own uninstall, many of which leave things clean as a whistle, but they do vary. I don’t like to pan things, but one program I would not recommend is Ashampoo Uninstaller. Revo is a top-of-the-line standard in my book, but then, I bought three Pro licences on sale for forty bucks not too long ago to add to what I already had.

I have always used the Strong (advanced or whatever) setting with great results and NO PROBLEMS. Perhaps it’s just my system is set with safe defaults or I’m really lucky. Who knows. It just works for me.
