On an ordinary Dell PC running Windows XP, checking the web for Office 2003 updates does not work. Selecting Help, then Check for Updates from within any Office application (Word, Excel, etc.) produces absolutely nothing: no attempt to access the web (I have DSL), no error message, nothing. Windows Update, Symantec’s Live Update, et all work fine. Can anyone tell me what might be wrong?

Do you have a firewall enabled?

Yes. I am running Symantex’s Internet Seclruty with what I believe are all normal settings.

You could try going to Office Online and checking from that end. On my copy of Office 2003 clicking on the Help>Check for Updates pretty much just takes me to this site.

You can also try to help facilitate reaching any site that’s giving you a problem by putting the Symantec Box (for NIS or NPF) up>Options>and adding the office site to the Firewall and Web tabs.

I don’t know if this will have anything to do with it, but check post 341982. You might also try getting to the site without your firewall activated (I know this sounds like heresy, but a few minutes is unlikely to be a problem).

I don’t think Office XP had this feature, so it’s difficult to compare apples-to-apples. However, what you should see is a browser window popping open, and then a Microsoft site loading. If you don’t even get a browser window, this could indicate that when Office was installed this feature was somehow disabled. If you restart the installer and look at the options you can custom install (e.g., add/remove features), do you see anything that could be related?
