Service Pack 2 just got released via Microsoft Update. Seems to work OK, but it might be advisable to make a Restore Point before installing it.

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 27, 2005 at 9:04 pm #975727Thanks, for me the Microsoft Update site offered a 47.6MB download for Office 2003 SP2 and a further 30.7MB for OneNote 2003 SP2
The full download is available from Office 2003 Service Pack 2 (104293 KB)

AskWoody_MVPSeptember 27, 2005 at 9:03 pm #975741It would be wise to download the large file if you have ANY of the other MS programs that are or were in the Office Family. I needed to insert my CD for FrontPage 2003 since I downloaded the smaller file.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 28, 2005 at 2:36 pm #975932Have you installed the 100+Mb update? I have, and MS Update is not prompting me to install the smaller update. It did prompt me this morning however, informing me that new updates were available. When I went to the MS Update site, the only thing that was listed was a new Junk Mail Filter for Outlook. Perhaps that is what your prompt is about as well.
To avoid this confusion in the future, I would suggest that you set your Automatic Updates to “Notify me but don’t automatically download or install them”. This way, you will receive notification and then you can manually connect to the Update site and choose which updates you wish to download and install.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 28, 2005 at 4:08 pm #975964I’m not sure where the automatically downloaded patch is located. Perhaps someone else can jump in on this. I’m not sure, but there is a possibility that even if you do find and delete this file, you may still receive the prompts to install it. There may be a registry entry somewhere that triggers this prompt until the patch is actually installed. You can, if you wish, go ahead and install the smaller patch instead of the larger one. This patch will install all of the necessary files that are required on your system. The only difference (as Dave pointed out) is that you may be prompted for an installation CD if you have installed any additional MS Office programs.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 29, 2005 at 11:29 am #976077If you just go ahead and install the larger file (the 100 + MB one), you won’t get prompted again. You also need to reboot and restart Office. As one of the other posters mentioned, you might want to have MS Update just notify you that updates are available. You can always tell it to hide any updates you don’t need or want.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 9, 2005 at 1:37 am #977896Hi John:
Thanks, but no, I don’t have Front Page 2002; I have 2003. I’m not quite sure what happened, but it did update using the automatic update. Funny, when I updated previously (the first service pack), Word still updated {Numpage} fields one at a time, something SP 1 was supposed to cure. After applying this service pack, I no longer have that problem.
