Did Microsoft release free genealogy software?. If so, where have they hidden it?
    Thanks

On what is your impression that Microsoft had developed genealogy software based?

I actually saw a reference to it in the computer section (on line) of the Guardian national newspaper, I would have said in the last two years. Someone else thinks as I do – see other reply to post.

      Hi Mike

A couple of years ago Microsoft did release an Access genealogy database but it was not particularly user friendly. I have just searched for it and it appears to have been withdrawn.

Thanks Tony for yor efforts. MS need an index to withdrawn stuff!.

If you’re looking for genealogy software, you could try looking at this thread – if you haven’t seen it already. HTH

To post your family information to the web from a Genealogy program you should have a look at http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/FAQ/wcindex.html%5B/url%5D Search Family Trees

Dave, thanks for your suggestions. I’m not really wanting to put my family tree on the web. What I do want to do, and I thought that MS had offered specific software is to create a pedigree chart. This starts with one rectangle and two connecting lines, one to each of two more rectangles. rectangle 1 is me, 2 is dad, 3 is mum. Each of those three havetwo new rectangle’s attached for dad’s dad and mum, Mum’s dad and mum etc. It can go back about 10 generations to get to around 1600. The problem is that the rectangles for any one generation are twice as many as the previous generation. Consequently the boxes get smaller and smaller in height, leaving less space for the info (name, dob. dom, dod). I have an A3 sheet (twice A4) but it runs out of space for anything other than name and possibly dob after about 6 generations. There are a couple of other sites, not MS, but I suspect that there will be problems with the printing of a physically large file full of empty spaces connected by lines!. Thanks again for your help.

OK, I would suggest that you check out the thread listed above. There are some free programs. Download any of them, they will all do what you want, also with any of these programs you can produce the data to be printed out in a PDF file which can be printed on the EXTRA wide printer/plotters that most print shops like Kinkco’s have.

I have had real good performance with both PAF and Legacy programs.
