Is subscribing to a patch service like 0patch worth the money for a home user?

If you want to stay on Win10 and continue getting update protection, the answer is “Yes”
Your other option is a 1-year ESU (Extended Service) from Microsoft when it becomes available.

1-year ESU (Extended Service) from Microsoft

Thanks.  Is the pay version of 0patch any better than the free version for a home user.  I already have all of the past MS updates and 0patch’s website for the pay version doesn’t seem to cover anything beyond 0patches.

0Patch without pay covers Zero-day patches.
0Patch with pay covers more updates. Read further on the website.

Last week my Dell G7 7700 Laptop started to run slowly. When I would type something on the keyboard, the characters would take a few seconds to appear. That is very unusual. I had 15 or so Tabs open in Firefox and Photoshop running. I noticed Duck,Duck Go active in memory, so took that out. Still ran slow after a reboot or so. Ran Task Manager, but all was good there.
Decided to run the “Windows Preview” and “Net Framework Preview” from last week. I had Win 11 26100.3476. It installed Win 11 26100.3624. Since then all runs very well.
Don’t know what got fixed, but I’m happy.
I paused it, but I suppose that Tuesday’s update will be similar, with small changes?

Yes it is. I used 0Patch Pro – the paid version – on my two Windows 7 laptops for several years before moving to Win 10. It was seamless and far less “fraught” than doing a monthly MS update. The patches are just delivered to your computer when they are ready – nothing you need to do to keep things up to date.

      Yes, as PKCano said,

0Patch without pay covers Zero-day patches. 0Patch with pay covers more updates. Read further on the website.

I don’t believe you can get a paid version that supports the latest versions of Win 10 until after  your Win 10  version is no longer supported by MS – in October – but I may be wrong. Right now you can get the free version which will deliver Zero-day patches, but once MS is no longer supporting Win 10, then the paid version is well worth the cost and the ease of use.

Since this month’s updates won’t be released until Tuesday, isn’t it a little premature to raise the Defcon level to 2?

      • #2760315

I always warn on the Thursday before the Tuesday.  Time for folks to ensure they are set.

Thank you for the clarification. So it serves as a reminder of the upcoming Patch Tuesday, and not as an immediate warning not to patch. I sometimes don’t get around to patching until a few days before the next month’s patches, as is the case this time.

0Patch Pro supports current Windows 10 and will continue to support after EOL for at least another 5 years.

I’m running Win 10 22H2 and had an email conversation with Mitja at 0Patch in August 2024. Here’s a snip:

Me: “So the free version for Win 10 will just get 0day patches – but can be
converted to a paid subscription next year. Is there anything in the
paid version now that would be of benefit to a Win 10 laptop that I
        should consider it now?”

Mitja: “No, right now if you’re updating Windows 10 regularly and not using Office 2010 or 2013, 0patch PRO would not provide any additional value to you.”

Also, Win 10 22H2 is scheduled to be “security adopted” in October 2025, so it seems that paying for the Pro version and getting the benefit of 0Patch depends on what version of Win 10 you have. 22H2 will only get 0Day till they officially adopt it in October – then paying for the Pro version will  provide all updates: “Note that in addition to critical security patches for the above Windows versions and products, we’re also providing “0day” patches (patches for vulnerabilities that don’t have official vendor patches yet) for all supported Windows versions.”

So again, depends on what version of Win 10 you are running.

      Susan,
Any idea when you will OK win11 22h2?

Susan wrote “The April Windows 10 update will fix the issue affecting some printers connected via USB”.  Not so fast!

For my Home Win 10 with a home type Epson printer connected via USB, it has started acting weird after recent Win updates.

      1) Either it comes on and spits out several pages of nonsense characters or

      2) It comes up with status “offline”. The only way to get it online (tried unplugging, turning off and on, clearing queue – all to no avail) is to restart Win 10. Then it comes up ready as soon as the restart comes on.

Never had any problems with this printer for years until now.

I also get Epson update notices and do them immediately.

It deleted my HP printer driver – but I was able to add it back to my drivers and it was fine.

It deleted my HP printer driver

After I had posted my comment, I went back to double check I had all updates and firmware, but when I was going to print out the status sheet, the printer had DISAPPEARED from Settings/Devices/Printers. Nothing. No printers.

So before panic set in I did a restart that had worked before. Wala – the disappearing printer reappeared and worked fine – until the next time I reconnect it.

Stupid me. I have not installed the April update yet. Susan was just announcing ahead that the update included a fix for the printers. Some many months, so many updates, so many versions. How does one keep up?
