How many years ago did MS start releasing previews ?

      Windows 10 Home 22H2, Acer Aspire TC-1660 desktop + LibreOffice, non-techie

I know some people like to tinker, but I never download “preview” or “beta” files.  They don’t pay me to be a beta tester and a guinea pig so I avoid them like the plague.

I always do. I have current backups and it takes all of 5 minutes to restore them.

How right you are!  I updated a laptop fine after you gave an early “all clear” late in June.  I delayed for a few days, and then updated my main desktop.  Ouch!  I’ve been fighting ever since to have internet access stay up for nmore than a few minutes – unsuccessfully.  My laptop still works fine, but not the desktop.  The Geek squad finds that it seems to work there, but not here – even when I strip all else out of the way and connect the pc directly to the digital signal from my digital phone (we are directly services by a digital pbx serving our large CCRC).

      Ugh!

Are you sure the issue isn’t the hardware in the internet connection?

For those with W10/ 11 Pro editions or greater, there is the option to ignore previews completely via GP within the ‘Windows Update> WUfB’ section.
Then you can relax knowing that GP settings take the strain and removes the pain.

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...

        Toggling them Off works, too.

        Preview-Updates

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!
We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems; we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things.
We were all once "Average Users".

“Get the latest updates…” in WU has been off since the day it appeared on all my machines, yet when I turn Pause Update off, my Win 10 Home pc only downloads .Net update previews. I don’t ever recall downloading a .Net update that was not a preview.

We users sure “Cop-a-lot” of what we don’t ask for and often what we don’t want from MS.

Last week I purchased an ASUS NUC14Pro (Intel Core Ultra i9 185H up to 5.1 GHz) barebones kit (plus 4TB SSD & 32 GB DDR5 & Win 11 Pro, photos attached) and it’s a good bit faster (double everything) than my 5 year old Lenovo Legion. But the NUC says it’s “AI Ready”. Whatever that means. Nobody ever says what that actually means to the end-user experience, the UX. Seems like smoke and mirrors a bit, while AI still gets installed uninvited by cloak and daggers elsewhere. Anyway, this is the third time I’ve installed a barebones NUC (the other two were from Intel itself), and when I get to the Windows installation part, Windows can’t find the built-in 2.5 Gbps LAN or WiFi6 and stops dead in its tracks. Refuses to install. There’s workarounds involving Shift+F10 to install the drivers but you have to go hunting for them. MS doesn’t help at all. Modern OS refusing to install in a modern PC. Typical!!!

It’s almost enough to make me want to upgrade the lot to Linux Mint!

Thanks for your information. Keep up the good work!

They don’t pay me to be a beta tester

      Truer words were never spoken.

And while we’re on the subject, they need to pay me for all my data they’ve stolen.

I am assuming your using Windows 10. If so, that you are a beta test. All updates are beta test. MS does NOT test any updates in house after firing the department several years ago. All Windows 10 and 11 home and pro users are beta testers. Only Windows 10 and 11 Business, Goverment, Enterprise are less users. These are more for steal data and sell it for profit. MS is M$$$$$$. need to add an $ to make more money.

And while we’re on the subject, they need to pay me for all my data they’ve stolen.

MS will not pay people. They need to steal your data to sell it on the black market and/or blackmail users to make a profit. MS is M$$$$$$. need to add an $ to make more money.

This are my view of current MS that many will disagree with.

Actually Microsoft does test.  However they don’t test on what I would deem consumer level machines.  Their testing is more geared towards enterprises.

Allowing unfounded allegations of blackmail by Microsoft is a new low even for AskWoody.

But then as I’ve always said, anonymous users can get away with “murder” comparatively.

I used Susan’s simple command to force Windows to stay on 22H2 last year. I’d like to update to 23H2 now but not sure how to do so. Do I need to “un-do” the 22H2 force and then set a similar 23H2 force? Or just set a 23H2 force (and if the latter, how?? Thanks!

about this I saw on the recent alert:

Recent issues with KB5039302 for Windows 11 23H2 are a clear example of why I recommend care and patience. We reported that Microsoft had acknowledged that the update was triggering machines to reboot — repeatedly. Microsoft pulled the update.

Microsoft temporarily paused or pulled the update but then resumed and re-offered the KB5039302 update a few days later.

guess someone did not get the memo from these articles from BleepingComputer and Neowin:

Microsoft resumes rollout of Windows 11 KB5039302 update for most users – BleepingComputer

Microsoft resumes the rollout of botched KB5039302 Windows 11 update – Neowin

Microsoft has resumed the rollout of the June Windows 11 KB5039302 update, now blocking the update only for those using virtualization software.

I’d rather not install previews, but when it comes to .Net updates, that’s all WU offers to my Win 10 Home pc. Of course I pause updates on that pc until you give the all clear. My Win 10 Pro pc doesn’t have this problem.

I know it’s a little late to ask since that pc will soon be replaced with a new one with Win 11 Pro installed, but do you have any idea what might cause WU to never offer a non-preview .Net update?
