Many people will appreciate information on the Windows 10 ESU program for *business*.  I read that the personal ESU would be a one-time, one year, non-renewable event.  The Business version could extend to three years with annually increasing/doubling fees (similar to the Win 7 ESU.)  I would be interested getting the three year version since replacing my Win 10 laptop with a new machine sooner would not be an attractive option.  Thank you.

“If you are my age, you will remember when daylight saving was paused to
help with the energy crisis in December 1973.”

Daylight Saving Time was not paused in 1973.  It was made permanent for 2 years, beginning in January 1974.  It was popular with 79% of Americans but that popularity dropped to 42% in 3 months.  This was mainly due to dark mornings, which is what what you get from DST.  The program was ended early in October of 1974.  DST is a program that has not delivered on promises to save energy, is not needed by the farming industry, and is dangerous to our health.  It is time to eliminate it and I will gladly do my part to ensure all systems I manage are compliant.

You are splitting hairs – the effect was that it was paused. My point is that we will once again need to patch and hopefully 10 will get these updates and it’s not after the end of life of that platform.

I never remember which MS-DEFCON level means what. Is DEFCON level One Lord Voldemort or puppies and butterflies? And thanks for the article!

      • #2753423

DEFCON 1 & 2 mean don’t patch with updates that have not been classified with higher DEFCON numbers.
DEFCON 3 means patch wit caution.
DEFCON 4 & 5 mean go ahead and patch with the current patches.

The DEFCON System is explained if you click on the “MS-DEFCON System” button in the Menubar at the top of every page.

You can change the number of days you’re allowed to revert to Windows 10/11 after upgrading to Windows 11 24H2:

Type the command below into Windows Terminal (Admin), and press Enter.

      DISM /Online /Set-OSUninstallWindow /Value:<days>
where <days> is a number between 1 and 60 (default is 10 days).

You must make this change before the current period has expired and the backup image deleted. You cannot extend this period beyond 60 days by running the command again.

      well past it’s official expiration.

      ‘its,’ not ‘it’s.’

since replacing my Win 10 laptop with a new machine sooner would not be an attractive option.

An attractive option is 0Patch Pro for ~$30 per year for many years to come.

Last December when we migrated from a Windows 10 Workstation to a new Windows 11 PC the new computer did not support our Cannon MX-870 scanner/fax/inkjet printer and it became inoperative.

At the time we understood that Cannon was no longer supporting the printer and its existing drivers were not compatible with Windows 11.

Now in this topic Susan is reporting that the, “Windows 11 preview includes a fix for an issue whereby apps might not recognize a scanner is available when it is connected.”

Does this mean that there may still life in our old Cannon MX-870?

I too have a Canon MX870 and would also like to know!

        Cheers,

        @Kathy-Stevens and @LH,

There’s no specific answer from Microsoft to what you’re both (along with others as well) wondering about. Here’s the only thing they say about it:Scanner-fix-info
From that rather terse wording, it makes me think they’re referring to devices that are traditional stand-alone flatbed scanners or scanners with an input feed tray that do nothing more than scan documents for use on a computer by turning them into PDFs, JPGs and other image formats.  😐

the only 2 US states that do not observe daylight saving time in the USA are Arizona and Hawaii

Thank you for a wonderful article, Susan. I have a question though. How do I get extended support for Windows 10 from Microsoft? Sorry to sound so clueless.

Stay tuned.  I will let you know.

Thank you Susan.  BTW, although I’m a Plus member, it would be nice that when I receive my Plus newsletter, I could sign in directly as a Plus member.  i.e. I click the “comment” link in the newsletter, it takes me to the article, but when I sign in, it takes me to my account, rather than to the newsletter I was in.

Then I have to look up the issue number to make sure I’m in the right place to post the comment or question.

I’ve noticed that AskWoody login sessions are only good for 2 weeks (if you check the box for “Remember Me”), after which you must login again. It would be nice if that period could be extended for at least a month, perhaps longer.

I only get logged out on a browser update.

My password manager logs me in in about 10 seconds.

          cheers, Paul

Thanks for your replay.  I have no trouble logging in.  e.g. I logged in to respond here.  However, when I did, I get to a home page, have to search for this issue, & then click on it.  I’m just saying that once I’m looking at a newsletter & login as a Plus member, it should keep me on the same issue.
