Microsoft has released its first-Tuesday set of non-security Office patches. Several of you have written to me, to ask if you should install them. Sho

My Office 2013 Outlook.exe is failing frequently after this April 4 patch.

    • #44947

Any idea if the problem is KB3114996? See symptoms in the comments at http://www.infoworld.com/article/3052307/microsoft-windows/heres-the-rundown-on-microsofts-latest-non-security-office-patches.html

UPDATE: As noted by Ed, patch 3114996 is for Office 2010, and you said you’re running Office 2013. That being the case, I wonder if your problem might be with KB3114941, which is Office 2013 specific?

    • #44948

The KB number you provided Woody is for an Office 2010 patch. John Rucker states he has Office 2013.

    • #44949

OOOOPS. Yep, that won’t be the culprit.

    • #44950

John, I have all recent patches installed on few computers with Office 2013. Could you please let us know what is actually failing to test if it happens to me and try to identify if it is patch related.
It would be useful to mention if your Outlook 2013 connects to POP or IMAP or an Exchange server or else.

This morning KB2952664 reappeared once again in my windows update optional list, unchecked. And, as in the past, I hid the update again.

    • #44952

Yep, on my machine too. Win 7 64-bit Pro.

    • #44953

woody, what about 313 9398 and 313 9852. you cautioned about not installing theses 2 in the beginning of march after 3-8’s updates. do em,hold em, or get rid of them?

      thanks thom

    • #44954

Don’t install them until the next MS-DEFCON change. Neither is pressing.

    • #44955

I have to back up several other’s statements concerning KB3139852. Since I installed this one my wait times to produce results during Windows update have dropped drastically. I installed this one solo for testing purposes so I’m sure this is the one that helped.

The GWX Control Panel still showed “you appear to be safe” after installing it by the way.

      Woody,

Black Tuesday is approaching. Have any of your readers commented on, or been offered
      KB3140741 for 10?

It is a servicing stack update for Windows 10 version 1511. I mentioned earlier in March the problems my daughter and others were having with it. You indicated she should hold off installing it and perhaps MS would tweak it. Have you any news on this?

Should she try it again, or wait another week for Black Tuesday to hit us?

      Your input is greatly appreciated!

    • #44957

I’ll keep that in mind when we go back to MS-DEFCON 3 or 4. Thanks!

    • #44958

No need to thank me Woody, you’re the one that deserves ALL the gold stars!

I know you’re an unbelievably busy person and I can’t fathom handling as much as you keep on your plate constantly but the DEFCON thing should happen pretty soon as there’s only a few days left until the next Black Tuesday.

Stockpiling these updates for multiple months tends to bring you even more work explaining which ones are safe and which ones aren’t.

    • #44959

I’d wait until next Tuesday. Servicing stack updates can change for unpredictable reasons. After installing the next cumulative update, KB 3140741 may well work.

    • #44960

Thank you! I agree with Ed’s comment of you deserving all the gold stars!

My Sister had to place KB2952664 in hide 11 times on April 8, 2016. Windows 7 64 bit, ????? Now have her windows update placed on never install updates. She will update manually once every week. Recomending this to all my family and friends, in an attempt to stop this.

      @Woody,

I wanted to make a suggestion. Maybe you could consider putting Josh’s GWX Control Panel download link in your “Link” section at the top of your home page?

    • #44963

      Good idea…. done….

It looks like KB 3139852 is being replaced/rolled-into 3145739 today, rated Critical by Microsoft. (3147458 or 3147461 for W10)
      https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/MS16-039

Named as 0-day critical here (link below) together with the latest Flash update.

I neither installed nor hid kb3139852 and now it’s not showing up for me any more. I am able to check for Windows updates quicker than ever, but svchost is still cranking away.

    • #44966

I can verify that we had an issue with Outlook 2013 crashing randomly after the KB3114941 update and had to Uninstall it on affected PCs/Terminal Servers to stop the crashing.
