We have a new HP Z2 Tower G9 Workstation that was was setup on December 14.

It is running Windows 11 24H2.

It has an Intel Corei7-14700 Microprocessor, 32 GB of System memory, and NVIDIA T400 4GB Graphics

Apps and data files were transferred from its Windows 10 predecessor using LapLink PC Mover Professional.

After tweaking the Z Tower and removing unwanted Microsoft apps using Revo Uninstaller Pro all is well except that Windows 11 does not support our Canon MX870 scanner/printer/fax.

We use Microsoft Office Home and Business 2021 and other software that does not make use of the cloud.

Should we / can we role the system back to Windows 11 23H2 using InControl?

      • #2732451

Windows 11 has a “compatibility mode” for older applications.  Look up the fairly simple procedure online and try to get the older Canon MX870 driver to work.
As always, Susan will have the best advice!

You can’t roll back to 23H2 if you installed 24H2 from the get go.

There is a known issue with certain scanners and 24H2

        https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/resolved-issues-windows-11-24H2#3446msgdesc

It was supposed to be fixed in the December patches, but I’ve heard reports that not all issues are cleared up.

In addition https://www.usa.canon.com/support/p/pixma-mx870 I’m only seeing the driver offered up if you indicate Windows 10.  You can try the Windows 10 driver but you may need to buy a new printer.

Canon has a list of all of their inkjet printer and scanner models that are compatible with Windows 11 at

          https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/s/article/FAQ100626

The Canon MX870 is not included on the list.

I was hoping to find a driver workaround so we can continue using the decade old machine.

Fortunately, we have a Brother MFC-6490CW printer/scanner/fax on the shelf that has Windows 11 compatible drivers.

The problem is the thing is huge, in comparison to the MX-870, and won’t easily fit in the user’s workspace.

We will setup the MFC-6490CW and put the MX-870 on the shelf in hope that Microsoft addresses the driver comparability problem sometime in the future.

Thank you for providing the link to Canon’s Upgrade Program.

I’m afraid we are taking a break from purchasing additional IT hardware. We just finished purchasing a number of HP Z2 Tower G9 Workstations (some are still their boxes) and need to step back, take a break, and see where we want to go next.

I find it time-consuming to identify the hardware we want. This is particularly true for printer/scanner/fax machines. I looked at a number of replacements – including units recommended by Consumer Reports – but was unable to make up my mind.

Thus, the recovery of the Brother MFC-6490CW printer/scanner/fax that I’m in the process of setting up.

In this case it’s not a Microsoft problem, the root cause is a lack of drivers for Windows 11.  You’ll (should) be able to get basic functionality if you connect it, just not full features like you are used to.  For example it will probably do a basic print but not full features scan.

10 years old is indeed a long time in printerland.

While using the Canon MX870’s Windows 10 drivers our problem is that it does not play well with Adobe Acrobat Standard 2020.

Particularly when trying to scan using high resolution.

And now, we are now having problems installing the Windows 11 drivers for our Brother MFC-6490CW printer/scanner/fax.

We are now open to recommendations for quality scan / fax hardware.

The transition to Windows 11 is becoming very expensive.

In Microsoft’s world, faxing is either dead or moved to electronic faxing.

I just bought a Ricoh (aka fujitsu) scanner that I’m liking.  Scansnap ix1600

Adobe acrobat 2000 and Windows 11 doesn’t play nice nice.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Acrobat_version_history

You may need to upgrade that Adobe or look to a newer non Adobe PDF software.

All the kids on the playground have to be the same age to get along well has always been my tech mantra.

              Susan

              Ricoh Scansnap ix1600 it is.

Just ordered one from B&H Photo and it will be delivered Monday – if the creek don’t rise.

Will keep the Canon MX870 to use as a fax machine.  It will fax without being connected to a computer.

Be safe – I hope that you are away from the fires in California.

I am in the process of setting up the ScanSnap iX1600 for the first time and Adobe Acrobat Standard 2020 is not recognizing the hardware.

Do you know if the scanner is compatible with Adobe Acrobat and, if so, how do I get them to play nicely together?

Howdy, running outlook.office.com (outlook365) on the web, on an ipad. This morning a new version must have been in use; there is no more “Move to folder” widget up on the top bar. Gone!

      Any advice?

    • #2732477

In your post you make mention of InControl, and you state that “Gibson Research’s InControl allows you to stay on Windows 10 as long as you wish. Just set it to Windows 10 22H2. It’s easy to control.”

I have what are probably two stupid questions, but I hope someone will indulge me and respond:  If I set my computer to stay on Windows 10 22H2, will I continue to receive the security and other updates that Microsoft puts out?  If so, will I be able choose whether or not to install them?

      Thanks in advance.

      • #2732514

InControl will allow you to stay on Win10 22H2. Win10 22H2 reaches End of Service (EoS) on October 14, 2025, so you will not get the monthly updates after that time.

InControl controls Feature Updates (version changes). It does NOT control monthly Cumulative Updates or let you choose which updates Windows Update installs. It will only control staying on Win10 or upgrading to Win11.

I’ve said this before but I wouldn’t be shocked if Microsoft extends Windows 10 security patches for free for another year or two. Depending on the source, Windows 10’s market share amongst Windows PCs is still sitting around 60-70%, as of Q4 of 2024.

Microsoft’s plan to force people to buy new PCs to support the buggy mess that is Windows 11 is not working. For most consumers, their Windows 10 PC works perfectly fine and there’s literally no reason to upgrade. The North American economy is awful at the moment and some people can’t afford new devices. Or, some people, like myself, straight up don’t like 11 because of bugs, ads, or the increased clicks to do simple tasks.

You will have Windows 10 support with 0Patch Pro for 5 years at least.

I don’t understand this: “If you read your email in a Web application and don’t use your computer for surfing the Web — but you can’t let go of one beloved program that still runs well on Windows 10 — the sky is not falling. You can purchase a cheap tablet to surf and read your email while you continue to use your Windows 10 device for that prized app.”

I use Office Outlook 2019 with Gmail for email and about all I do is surf the internet and store pictures and music and some documents on my Windows 10 computer.  I don’t want to change to Windows 11 because I don’t want to learn another system. I finally feel comfortable with W10 and now I have to change again.  I thought I had until the Fall of 2025.

Has that changed?  I have to change to Windows 11 now?

Win10 22H2 does NOT expire until Oct. 14, 2025. You do NOT have to change to Win11 NOW.

Win10 22H2 will continue to get updates until Oct 14. At that poing you have several options to keep using Win10 safely. Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates (ESU) for another year for $30 US. Also, 0Patch offers updates for 5 years after Win10 stops getting updates. Their annual fee is similar to the one MS charges.

Further, when/if you decide to upgrade to Win11, you will have to be sure your PC meets the hardware requirements. Although there are ways to bypass those requirements now, MS may get stricter and stricter. Already, there are requirements that cannot be bypassed in 24H2. So if your PC is older, you may have to consider a new PC or consider changing your OS to one that can run on your current hardware.

So, there are options. Which one you choose is up to you. But you are certainly not up against a deadline tomorrow. And when you do make the decision, there are still options.

True although, that all depends on how ‘difficult’ MSFT intends to make IT over the next 10 months..
To coin one of their Windows 95 OS PR quotes:

          What are they?

          • #2735322

            What are they?

This PC doesn’t currently meet Windows 11 system requirements
If you see the above prompt when trying to perform an in-place upgrade to Windows 11 24H2, with either a report of one, or both, of:

            • This PC’s processor doesn’t support a critical feature (PopCnt)
            • This PC’s processor doesn’t support a critical feature (SSE4.2)

Then it means that you won’t be able to upgrade to Windows 11 24H2, period.

      Thank you for your reply.

My computer is 5 years old this month.  Sometimes the Windows update page says congratulations your pc is good for Windows 11.  Other times it says to check hardware requirements.  I don’t know why it changes the message.  Windows whimsy, I guess.

I am thinking it would be best to buy a new computer rather load Windows11 onto this 5-year-old computer.  But it would be easiest and cheapest to give Microsoft $30 and press on with what I have.

Also, I have an HP ENVY 5540 All-in-One Printer which is older than the computer. Probably best replace that too if I go to Windows 11.

Glad I have time to think about it.  I can afford a new computer and printer but I don’t want to go through learning new stuff.  My 78yo brain is running out of storage.

      All opinions welcome.

I have an HP ENVY 5540 printer, too.

Drivers that are compatible with Windows 11 are available from the HP website so you have nothing to worry about on that front.

Despite its relatively flimsy construction, I’ve been impressed with its service (for a home environment) over the years. The only downside is that a genuine HP cartridge now costs 50% of the original purchase price of the printer!

As PKCano says, you do not have to make any decisions now regarding upgrading/replacing your PC.
