I know it’s getting late there.

“Use the time between now and next Tuesday (Wednesday for those of you outside the northern hemisphere)”

I don’t think being in the southern hemisphere changes the day. Maybe east and west… 🙂

Trust me: destroying old-fashioned hard drives not only relieves stress but also provides you with the strongest magnets you have ever had. Solid-state hard drives are not as much fun to destroy, nor do they provide the same level of magnet entertainment for your refrigerator.

What magnet?? I’m ignorant of what components make up a computer – yes I know there is a hardrive, battery, discs, etc. But no clue on the magnet. I have a 5-year Dell that I probably will be retiring soon and will take your advice on destroying the hard drive. Peace of mind! But that and a magnet – wow! : ) I just don’t know what magnet there is.

About those hard drive magnets: they can wipe the info on the magnetic stripe on credit cards, ID badges and hotel room “keys” very effectively at a longer range than one might expect. Not so much of a problem with the “chip” credit cards, but still…

Susan, you’ve said here “For consumer and home users, I recommend using deferral tools such as WUMgr —”.

What about WUshowhide is back!?

I find it sooo much simpler to use.

Do I have to decide 1st to install 21H2 before installing my Windows Updates? What is the recommendation of what order to install first to ensure no issues?

Last I remember was this Fall or Summer, that 21H2 didn’t offer any worthy things for regular consumer users…so why is the new recommendation is to install it (even with the confirmed bugs in today’s DEFCON 2 post) ?

How worried for non-tech savvy person for more possible/unforeseen bugs on 21H2?
I guess I’m just looking for re-sureness/ its going to be fine. Or should I still wait…

I would do an image backup of the system then run Windows Update and let it do its thing. You may have to run it multiple times.

The recommendation for 21H2 is not really new now. 21H2 is stable and has the longest support window. The confirmed bug is one bug concerning files not being deleted when resetting a PC. You don’t need to worry about it.

I’ll 100% guarantee that there are undiscovered bugs in every operating system every released on any hardware. You’ll drive yourself nuts worrying about things no one knows about.

And the same bug is present in all currently supported versions of Windows 10 anyway, i.e. 20H2, 21H1 and 21H2. (With an easy workaround of using Settings, System, Storage, Storage Sense, Free up space now to delete Windows.old after any Reset.)

Steve Gibson’s InControl utility will work to hold or defer Windows updates.

Unless he changed it, it controls feature releases, not updates (patch Tuesday security updates)

@sb Is it ok to defer/hide all of March Updates & leave the Updates(that have been sitting since Fall) & 21H2 in order to extend the DEFCON 5 quiet for February? Since I can’t clear WU cache after hiding 2 updates & yesterday a new/ never had Wake up from Hibernation Issue or in the future when I’m busy in the wrong time.

I’m asking this also because I don’t turn on this custom 2014 Desktop that often and so when I decided to turn on my Desktop and saw DEFCON 5 Post. I wanted to take your recommendation to take this opportunity to move to 21H2.
