Time to turn off Automatic Update again. If you survived the brutal barrage of bad patches in July, and avoided the 1809 carnage last week, you should

There was a turtle by the name of Bert.

And Bert the Turtle was very alert.

When patches threatened him he never got hurt,

He knew just what to do.

      He’d shut down updates.

      Shut down updates.

He did what we all must learn to do.

You and you and you and you.

      Shut down updates!

Good advice for all Windows versions: Turn off automatic updates.

If you leave Automatic Updates turned off in the aftermath of what we’ve seen in the past week, I salute you. Somebody has to walk around with a “Kick Me” sign stuck on their back.

      On?

Avoid panic. Make your backups before Patch Tuesday arrives. If all your precautions are overridden and you receive an unwanted update, you will have your backup.

Despite advice from GTP to leave settings at “Check but let me choose when to download and install.” I am going back to “Never check” today. I have been setting Updates at “Never check” after patching (wisely when Woody gives the go ahead at a DEFCON 3 level) for a couple of years and have encountered no problems with slow update checks.

How I love that little red cross under the flag in my taskbar (“Solve PC issues: 1 important message. Change Windows Update settings (Important)”) that tells me my drawbridge is up and I am safe. And update checks, well, they take about three minutes these days……………….when I do an update check, that is, once every month or two, on the odd occasions we’re at Defcon 3 long enough to remember to turn WU on. Everything seems to work better with Automatic Updates turned off, somehow.

After Woody gives us the go ahead and do the updates  I run them and then I turn off the check for updates untill the next months go ahead from Woody.

…we recommend deployment right away to devices selected for early adoption and ramp up to full deployment at your discretion. This will enable you to gain access to new features, experiences, and integrated security as soon as possible.

        Yeehaw! Full speed ahead!

Nice to see, how quick Ms fixed those minute bugs…

Okay, now, it’s time to make your backups.

On your mark, get set, go.
