MS Access Application Shortcuts

Hi all,

Lately some of my clients have been experiencing problems with their MS Access application shortcuts. The clients have been upgraded from MS Access 2002, where all the shortcuts worked well. Now the shortcuts will not work. They can be clicked, but nothing happens. This is a random problem I am experiencing and it is rather annoying. Any and all suggestions are welcome. TIA

Have you checked the target of the shortcuts? If they still point to the folder where Access 2002 used to be installed, they won’t work with Access 2007…

Okay, the shortcut targets were fine. Some additional info on this. If I 2x the .mdb, nothing happens; If I begin MSAccess.exe, then open the .mdb, all is fine. Any other thoughts. This doesn’t happen on all my client’s computers.

If a user can open a database from within Access but not from Windows Explorer, the file association for the .mdb extension is not correct.

Can they do the following?

[*]Right-click the .mdb file in Windows Explorer.[*]Select Open With > Choose (Default) Program… from the popup menu.[*]Point to Microsoft Office Access.[*]Tick the check box “Always use this program to open this kind of file”.[*]Click OK.

I’ve seen this before. Sometimes it is caused by a “phantom” instance of Access still being in memory. With the database closed, open the Task Manager and look at the Processes tab. See if there is an instance of Access listed; if so, select it and click the “End Process” button.

Not so convenient is to change your shortcuts. Rather than directly point to the database (and then have Windows select how to open the file), change your shortcut so it opens Access, something like this:

“C:program filesMicrosoft Officemsaccess.exe” “c:myfilesmydb.mdb”

Changing the shortcut to open Access seemed to be the best solution, i.e.,

“C:program filesMicrosoft OfficeOffice12msaccess.exe” “c:myfilesmydb.mdb”
