    Greetings All –

Happy New Year to everyone.  I’ve had a problem for awhile now.  I think it actually started with version 1709.  I like to tag my jpg & mp4 files.  I arrange all my photos & videos using file explorer, then import them into photoshop for editing. It helps to keep the tags.  The mp4 files no longer will allow tagging.  I get a message stating an unexpected error is keeping me from applying properties to the file.  It includes error code 0x80004001: Not implemented.  Like I said, the problem is relatively recent.  I have been using this method for years.  My jpg files tag just fine; it’s only the mp4 that has an issue.  An additional observation:  If I right click on the file & choose properties-details, there’s a place to enter the tag information.  Entering the tag, then clicking OK is when I get the error. If I view the same file in the preview details pane, the tag option is not even visible.  There’s a lot more stuff visible in the pane in a jpg file than in an mp4.  Thanks.

I too am recently having this exact issue. Any help would be appreciated.

A quick search reveals you’re not alone – plenty of folks are seeing the same error, and I’m not seeing any sort of fix for it.

I wonder if you’d find it worthwhile to use a donation-supported tag editor rather than File Explorer – this one looks like it’d do the trick, and probably add some useful features.

(I don’t use the software, and I’m not affiliated with the author in any way.)

If I’m understanding this correctly, you’re saying you can’t edit the information on the details tab of the properties of an MP4 file?  I just saw this topic under Recent Replies, so I brought up an MP4 file and easily edited the “Contributing Artist” on the file without any problem on my Win 7 machine.  All the other info. places were editable too.

Could it just be that you are using Win 10?  Microsoft (particularly Bill Gates) is very weird when it comes to video files, and I’ve heard that you can’t even play a movie type DVD with the Win 10 Media Player.

The OP is using Windows 10. (This is the Windows 10 support section of the forums.)

I forgot to mention that I did it with Windows Explorer.  No Third Party software required.

Hi, I have recently had the same problem.
I find out finally that the file name was too long – it counts together with the directory path, so if the total reaches, I guess, 256 characters, a lot of stuff starts to happen.

So if your filename seems to be a way too long, maybe shortening it can solve this issue.

If a prompting window occurs saying that the file cannot be located, add it to an archive, then rename it in the zipped file; or something like that… I am not an expert, but faced this cannot-be-renamed-becasue-too-long problem, but a simple search for ‘file name too long add it to archive’ will lead you to the solution even in this case.

      Hope it helped.

      Hello All –

I hadn’t checked in awhile, but either the Jan, Feb, or Mar Windows fixed the problem.  I can once again assign tags to my video files.  Thank you Microsoft.

I am having this same problem with jpeg files on a Windows 10 computer. Can’t edit anything under the Details tab in Properties. I can take the same photo files (they are on a jump drive) to my Windows 11 computer and edit no problem. Like assigning the Star rating or adding a Caption/Title or even adding/editing the Date Taken field. So the problem must be some setting in the Windows 10 computer.

Interesting.  I remember having the same problem with my photo files a long time ago.  I can’t remember when it resolved itself.  This post was created because I had the same problem, but only with video files–images were unaffected.  I haven’t had an issue with either for a long time now.  As I mentioned, one of the windows updates fixed it, so I don’t think I had an incorrect setting.  I wish I could give you some advice other than what’s already been recorded.  It’s very frustrating, I know.
