• Mozilla vs Avant (Various)

There seem to be a great many people who emphatically prefer either Mozilla or Avant. I luv Mozilla, but only because I compared IE with Mozilla and Moz won hands down. On the other hand, several websites I use for work work only with IE, so this is an incovenience to have to launch IE for one or two websites.

I am wondering how many people have tried both Mozilla and Avant, and are there any major differences between Mozilla and Avant that I should know about before trying Avant. Moz 1.4 seems to be stable enough on my machine, and I think I saw that some loungers were having some stability issues with Avant.

Also, does anyone know if Avant is IE website compliant? I know it is based on the IE core, but on a site that specifies IE, does it qualify?

    Any takers?

      Mike,
I switched to Avant from Netscape 7.n about six months ago. Yes, there is a slight smell of IE when I use Avant, but it’s not bad. There’s several features I like, and it’s a lot smaller program than Netscape 7. As for compatibility issues, I haven’t run into any, even when I go to microsoft.com.

      Hi Michael:
I use both. I prefer the features of Avant, for the most part. However, 2 annoying problems that I have with Avant is that if I switch away to copy a URL or something & then switch back to Avant, I can’t paste until I use the mouse to click inside the web page. Also, I’ve noticed that Avant seems to take longer (at least lately) to load numerous pages. While I’m loading pages with Avant, my mouse jumps all over the place so that I can’t click on the tab I want immediately.

Also, I can run Mozilla with about 10-12 tabs open, have Word open, & not run out of resources. With Avant, I run out of resources more quickly.

With Avant, however, I can have numerous groups of tabs that I can open & close. There seem to be more shortcut keys that I can use. Just lately, I’ve switched back to Mozilla because of the slowness of Avant & resource problem. Of course, trying to select a URL by double clicking it drives me crazy. Only IE & Avant seem to have that ability. My 2cents

Thanks Phil and Errol…I think I’ll just put up with the hassle of launching IE for the two sites I must use for work for right now. I don’t see enough positive stuff to make it worthwhile switching…I really love Moz compared to IE.

Although I only very occasionally come across sites that may require IE, I have found Firebird 0.6.1 to be the perfect blend of Moz & Avant – nearly the best of both worlds.

            Hi Bruce:
I thought Firebird was Mozilla without the email side. confused

              Hi, Phil ~

It is without a mail client and it is a Moz flavor, that is true, but that is it. If you recall, I tried Moz up to 1.3 and strongly disliked it, features failed to perform and just plain klunky….also couldn’t get any knowledgeable support for it, however, Firebird does all that I wanted and then some and plenty of support is out there with knowledge in all nooks of it.

Thanks, Bruce. I think I’ll give it a try.

Hi Bruce, was wondering if you ever got the Javascript problem you mentioned in the forum link resolved. I got the same error message when I tried it.

              Hi, Mike ~

Yes, I did. Make sure you download and install the v1.4.1 Java (not the 1.4.2).
