Moving Outlook 2003 into Win7-64bit

Hello – All,
I’m facing a horrible process in the coming weeks. A friend is buying a new
Dell desktop win7-64. Upgrading from xp home with office 2003. She needs
office for her email is outlook. I’ve never used outlook or office products.
Getting her old xp outlook emails into the new win 7 system is going to be
difficult since i don’t know what i’m doing!!! Using the easy transfer method
is that appropriate? I’ve read that copying the old xp outlook files onto an
external HD, then into outllok on the new machine is simple? is IT???? What
files need to be copied, etc.??? Surely more than just .pst files.
Doesn’t outlook keep folders/files on their servers? Then when I start outlook it should just populate? It that asking too much??

The link is for Vista, but it seems it would work for 7, too. If there are issues with the .pst file (as described here), they may also be solved by manually copying the .pst files.

All that is necessary to transfer her email from the old computer to the new computer is to copy all PST files from the old to the new. (Do a search for all *.PST files.)

Then, when you install office 2003 on her Windows 7 computer, and get her set up with Outlook 2003, you can then open each of the PST files in Outlook. All email will be there.

This process is simple and is guaranteed to transfer all of her email from the old computer to the new computer.

You mean pop3 vs imap, server name, etc?

I mean server, user access details, account type for all accounts used in outlook. It seems the automated process will do that. I recently moved to a new laptop and had to use a registry “hack”, and I guess I could have avoided that if I used easy transfer.

Almost a year ago I migrated from XP to Win7…one of my machines had Win7-64bit version and I was unable to get the 32 bit Office 2003 suite to work reliably on the 64 bit Win7. I was never able to figure out why even after making sure everything was updated completely. I eventually just installed the 32 bit version of Win7 and never had a problem since.
