• Moving applications from one drive to another

I’ve just got Partition Magic to partition my enormous new drive into more handleable chunks. Didn’t there used to be a utility called Magic Mover that came with it, that enabled you to easily move apps out of the first partition onto drive D or wherever? It doesn’t seem to be included with version 6. What else is there available to do something like that?

At the PM site they do make reference to:

DriveMapper utility – Easily move applications between partitions and automatically update the drive-letter references after partitioning.

      Is that what you’re after?

Well, I’m hoping so but there’s no specifics in the manual.

I may well be wasting your time – if so I apologise before you wart me! – but would IMSI’s windelete help you? I’ve never used it but there’s a tool within it called ‘move application’ which seems to indicate it can do what you want.

Hey, all suggestions are most welcome. Do you have an URL for that?

            • #520813

              Hmm,

              try http://www.imsisoft.com/

however, searching the site for “windelete” produces worrying results.

Also: don’t do a google search on “imsi windelete” and look at the second item down!

however, you might get a more balanced view here:

              http://www.zdnet.co.uk/pcdir/content/1999/…e/uninstallers/ imsi.html [/url]

and if all that fails, I can post you a cover disc with version 3 on it!

In the light of that article it looks as though McAffee Installer Online is the way to go. Thanks for pointing me there. bow

Of course I had to look at Google, but my search showed up ZDNet as the 2nd result. A quick look on the first page showed nothing suspicious. Not interested enough to dig further so will let sleeping dogs lie (now that’s another possible Smillie!) …and, no, don’t tell me I’m sure I don’t want to know.

Oh blush blush blush blush I’d just come from a discussion with our accountant about how she had found a lot of those sites while searching for *beads*, so I’m afraid I had the wrong mind set when I read your message. My abject apologies exclamation sad

A great utility that I have used (though not free) when upgrading disks is Norton Ghost. It will allow you to move the complete contents of one drive onto another, as I did when I went from a 10 to a 20Gig disk. You can copy multiple partitions, changing their relative sizes if you want and it works for all Windows operating systems and probably some others as well. It does many other things as well but I just use it for copying to larger disks.

Partition Commander can do all that. It just one App I’m looking to move.

          Hi
If it’s just one app, why not just Copy it (first)? Then Run it from the new place. If there’s any problem (can’t find ***.dll, or whatever) find that and move that as well, or edit the Registry. Apps are usually well documented therein.
I’ve done this many times, but I suppose it will depend on the program itself.

          Hi Eileen:

I haven’t used this app, but I trust stuff from Neil J. Rubenking of PC Magazine. You can read about & download it at http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,,000OD7,.html

That looks perfect but it is dated Jan 1997. Do you think it’ll work OK for Windows ME?

            • #521215

Hmmm. That may be another story. I don’t know much about Windows ME, so I don’t know if the registry structure has changed. Perhaps if you posted this on the Win ME board, there would be someone familiar it. Is there a reason that you don’t want to reinstall it?

              Sheer laziness? devil

              Eileen,

I’ve used partition magic for at least 3 versions of Windows and haven’t had any problems moving apps from one partition to another or resizing my partitions. In the new versions, it’s much easier to do than in early versions.

            • #523072

Have you got the latest version? The one *without* Magic Mover? It’s not immediately apparent how it’s done with this… dizzy sigh

We had Power Quest at our last KEGS meeting and it was stated that they were working of adding ‘Magic Mover’ back in. It may not make it until the next rev but it was a BIG marking mistake for them.

The new OS’s are requiring a lot of rework for this program. This was one of the BEST programs that Power Quest ever made.

Will those of us who were short-changed and didn’t get it be given any means of getting it other than a full upgrade?

            • #523141

That question was asked, the “demo” Jock, said he would NOT commit the company, but he thought it AY be a downloadable type if they can get it ready before the NEXT rev. aflame
