Movie Icon/photo and Movie Embedding (2003 office edition)

I have inserted a wmv into my powerpoint presentation.
1. I would like to make certain that when I put it onto a cd and transfer it to the computer that hotel will be using to give all lectures from I don’t have to create a complicated path statement. Anyway of embedding vs linking.
2. Any way to change the icon from a black photo to say a graphic or something else.
3. Any suggestions on using movies in ppt presentations would be appreciated. Like what editor to use to shorten the movie or skip within it during a presentation

1) You cannot embed a movie in powerpoint. Movies are always linked.

However the general consensus / workaround is to have the movie clip file in the same directory as your .ppt *BEFORE* you Insert > Movies > From file.
Then when powerpoint comes to play the movie clip (and perhaps it’s not in the same directory or drive letter)…it looks to the current/local directory. And fingers crossed…it finds your clip.

2) The “black photo” icon from your screengrab…appears to me to be the 1st frame of the video clip. If you want something else….either put a picture over the video….the picture will disappear when the clip starts playing….or for a professional touch…save one frame of the video as a bitmap (something nice)…and have that as the picture.

3) To edit the video clip. you will need something like Premiere (expensive…but does the job). Or search for a freeware editor on google.

One last tip…..don’t forget to copy the video clip to the CD as well as any other files you need. Take two copies…test test test!

Many thanks for a very complete answer. Helps a lot.
With respect to the black box. If I put a picture over it then i loose the double click functionality to get the movie going unless there is a more elegant work around

You should be able to start the movie on a single click.

If I needed to put an autoshape over the video to obscure the first frame, I’d probably set the autoshape to exit on a trigger — the trigger would be the autoshape itself. This is done in custom animation on the Timings tab.

That way you can click once to exit (disappear) the autoshape and click again to begin the movie. Or just set the movie to play automatically after the autoshape exit.

Also, be sure to test the presentation along with the video file on the hotel computer before your actual presentation time to ensure that the video actually plays on the hotel system. (No brainer, I know, but you’d be surprised at how many people skip this fundamental thing.)
