Has anyone moved their entire profile lock, stock and all folders to another partition? I have only moved My Documents to another partition and it would be great if there was not any downside (like a big perfomance hit ) to moving my entire profile out of D:Documents and SettingsSinjin to E:Sinjin. My objective is a quick back-up situation without having to look for this folder and that folder, just back-up everything. Thanks in advance for your input.

AskWoody_MVPMarch 5, 2003 at 11:21 pm #659037By moving “Documents and settings” to another drive, you will be getting your data, but also the Windows Temp and Internet temp files and any other related sub folder. Are you sure that you want to do this?
I have found, that it is much easier you redirect each program to a folder that I want to use for data storage.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 6, 2003 at 2:31 am #659071I guess this will be a group reply as you all brought up different viewpoints. First, I have a laptop with 3, but only 2 useable partitions. The ‘c’ is for a legacy save-to-disk file so I don’t get a message that it has changed or is missing when I boot up or resume from hibernation (625mb). My “D” drive is for my OS & Program Files (5GB). My “E” drive is for Data (4GB). That info was for Cowboy. If I understand Dave correctly I should just move the two folders from my profile that contain the Outlook PST and other Outlook stuff into the “E” drive and that would be a more efficient method than the rip the room out of the house to move the furniture that I was proposing out of laziness. If I do this will Windows automatically inform Outlook of the change? If not where in Outlook or the registry do I need to make the change? My bottom line desire is to back-up the “E” drive only as everything else is repairable or replaceable. I hope this clears up what I would like to do.

AskWoody_MVPMarch 6, 2003 at 3:04 pm #659192Like I said, I do NOT change any of the location of the folders listed in “Documents and Settings”. I tell the programs, MS Office, ‘Tools, Options’ and then the Files Location tab, where I what the default location to be.
I have been told, that some of the Windows updates may not get installed completely if the default location of Documents and Settings has been moved, or the location may get moved back to the Windows default location.
Yes, it is a pain sometimes when you do a open, insert and etc, and you are at “My Documents”, but I will live with it.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 8, 2003 at 2:15 am #659727My solution was a little bit of Dave and a little bit of Mary from an old post on the Outlook board. In Outlook 2000 which I use I could only find a place to define where the PST Archive would be. (That would be the Dave part) For the main PST file I just closed Outlook and put the PST and the little setttings file that was in the same folder in a new folder in the root of “E” named Outlook. When I started Outlook again it moaned and
that it could not locate the file and would I please tell it where I hid it. (That is the Mary part) Everything was perfect
after that. Now, all my back-up is a complete copy of “E”. A simple solution for a complicated world.
