Is it possible to assign some information (text) to a shape (rectangle, or image) and during the slide show, to click on that object, and make a text box appear with the information, without changing slides or doing anything else?

It would be cool that this “text box” had a “X” control to close it.

Since you’re using PPT 2002, you can do this with a trigger.

Create both the shape and the textbox. Right-click the textbox and choose Custom Animation. Then add the entrance animation you prefer.

Right-click the textbox in the custom animation task pane and choose Timing. Click the Trigger button. In the list for “start effect on click of,” select the shape.

Now when you click on the shape, the textbox will appear.

You can also set the textbox to exit on a trigger. Select the textbox on the slide and choose “add effect” in the custom animation pane. Choose an exit animation. Then, back in the Timing/Triggers area, set the textbox to start on click of — and choose the textbox itself in that list.

Note that if you want to add an effect to an object, you’ll select the object on the slide itself. If you want to change or modify an animation that’s already applied to an object, select the object in the list on the Custom Animation task pane. The “add effect” button will turn into a “change” button to let you know you’re on the right track.

I have PPT v.97 at home. Do I need VBA code / macros to make this work?

I don’t know the specific answer to your question, but PowerPoint 97 did allow you to animate an object onto the screen on a mouse click, any mouse click anywhere on the slide, not associated with a specific object on the screen. (Am I making sense? Think old school here.)

PPT 97 doesn’t have triggers, so yeah, you’d have to use code to get something like that to work.

Alternatively, you can set your slide to advance to a different slide on mouseclick, and on that other slide, you can have a duplicate of the original plus the textbox you want to have appear. Just don’t put a transition on the second slide, and it will look like the text just popped onto the screen.

There is a trick there that can do the job too, without the animations (that gets very tedious , if I have a large set of text help boxes).

The trick involves creating a bookmark to the same slide and use the bookmark text help tips to display the additional text!
