I’ll bet they could solve some of these problems with the Surface, or the problems would never have made it out the door in the first place, if they hadn’t let their testing staff go.

I suppose we should all be thankful that MS does not design and build engines for commercial jets. At some point, I think MS will find it necessary to reinvest in rebuilding the internal QA testing infrastructure as it becomes more clear that the downsides of not doing so are also expensive.

      # At the Microsoft Store
I went to the Microsoft store because I somehow cracked my screen. The screen crack is so minimal that I can hardly see it in most instances. I found out that it would be $800 to replace the device as Microsoft doesn’t repair the screen.

While there, I mentioned that the pen intermittently stops working after the Creator’s Update. I was told by the technician that it was the cracked screen, not the update. I immediately began doing research while right there in the store and showed him this feed. He dryly acknowledged the information.

The problem that really bothered me was that he was making me think I HAD to replace my device because that was the only way to resolve the fail to zoom and writing with pen issues, other than restarting the device. I was told that I would have to spend $800 to fix a problem that Microsoft created. That is very sad and discouraging. It makes me think that I will not purchase another Microsoft device.

My surface pen quit working.  Also, after reading this article I discovered the pinch feature had quit.

Does pinch to zoom fail as well when in this condition? Others have found that going into device manager and disabling/enabling the “Intel(R) Precise Touch Device” in device manager made both the pen and the multi-touch work again.
Open device manager, click on human interface devices to expand it and it should be near the bottom of the list.
You will find “Intel(R) Precise Touch Device” in the control panel in the category:
“Human Interface Devices” -> Driver -> Disable Device followed by “Enable Device”
Fixed both problems.  Thanks for the info.
