I want to upgrade from Of 97 to Of 2000; however, I do not want to lose my Access 97 in the process. I have never done an upgrade before, and don’t know just how much control I have over the procedure.

I don’t really like the setup for Office 2000. It’s very intimidating and it’s hard to see exactly what you are installing. However, it does allow you to keep the existing version of Office by selecting a different folder for the new version. If you only want to keep a single application, I’d suggest you uninstall Office 97 and reinstall just that app to its own Office97 folder. Then install 2000 in the default location. That keeps the samples working and protects your earlier version at the same time. I’ve done it both ways, and this is simplest down the road.

Great! Sounds like I could do that. Please clarify one thing. Do the “upgrade” installations require that the older version be installed? If I do the uninstall of Office 97 first, will I still be able to install the upgrade to Of 2000?

Uninstall it and then reinstall Access 97 (do a custom installation and only select Access to install) in a new location. It only requires a single application installed for the upgrade to install without an argument. Otherwise, you have to give it some evidence of the earlier version (I can’t remember what that is, probably the serial number or CD key).

Do I have to install the Service Releases before doing the upgrade?

I hope this is the last question. You have been very patient.

I don’t think you can install them afterward, so yes, I would highly recommend it.
