I bought a new PC a couple of weeks ago with WIndows XP Home edition installed. It came with a 19″ Samsung 955DF monitor, I returned it to the vendor a couple of days ago because it started to flicker badly in the right corner and the sometimes in a band in on the right hand side.

When I installed the new monitor yesterday I noticed it was using the plug/play driver native to Windows XP. I went to the Samsung website US version because the Canadian Samsung site took me to a web page that did not list a XP driver. Downloaded the XP driver and installed it. I tried to use Update driver in XP but the Wizard failed,. I used the setup program that came with the driver and it just installed it. Now XP says I’m using the Samsung 955 DF driver.

Before I found the correct driver I emailed Samsung, the person emailed me a bit of a cryptic message saying to use the Windows 2000 driver because the driver only adjusted the frequency. I would not say this statement is completely correct. Both the XP and 2000 driver were files about 65K large.

Could you inform me of the purpose of monitor drivers.

Is it OK to use the plug/play driver with XP.

When I upgraded my monitor some time ago the color started bleeding to the right corner. My telepone was too close Moved the phone — end of problem. It may not be related to your situation but it is one of those computer trivias that boggles my mind so I just had to mention it.

I’ve had similar experiences with other devices. It’s due to the nature of TV tubes. The electron streams inside are directed to the inside surface of the screen with magnetism. Any magnet near the screen will affect how the picture is displayed. Your phone was probably a cordless with a transformer in it to change AC to DC to charge the battery. Electricity running through a coil of wire creates an electro-magnet.

At work here, I set up a media cart… computer, VCR, TV. All plug into a power strip mounted to the cart. The extension cord from the cart to the wall coils up onto the side of the cart. When users only needed a short amount they would only unwind what they needed leaving the rest wound right next to the TV. *Poof* the TV the brand new TV didn’t work. Hehehe. I uncoiled the wire to fix it.

Monitor drivers tell windows what Resolution/Color Depth/Refresh Rate combinations are ok for that monitor to use. If you think it was a bit large it was most likely due to the install program.
