Help! I have a Lucent “winmodem” that used to work, BUT now in device manager, it says it’s hooked up to COM3 and everyhthing’s fine. However, when I dial out, I receive a message that the selected line or address is in use by another program or device on the line. Your call cannot be placed at this time. Please try again later. Any ideas on how to fix this or a work around? Thanks for your thoughts:-)

are you using any fax software that runs in the background, this holds the modem and waits for incoming calls.

From what you say, it almost sounds as if the modem is being accessed OK, but it isn’t getting a dialling tone. . . . ?
But – as Steve suggests, it may be something else has grabbed the modem.
Couple of things to check in the modem setup:
1] Is ‘check for dialling tone’ selected? Try toggling the setting and see if it makes any difference.
2] Can you select TAPI instead of COM3?

Otherwise, you say it used to work – can you think of anything that might have changed things? New software installed, service pack, etc ?

Note: some changes to modem settings require a total power-off to reset the modem. If you are only trying re-boots, it may be worth switching off for 15 secs or so.
